Why did they wait so long to make the announcement?

He waited that long in the offseason because he didn't truly realize he didn't want to play football anymore until training camp.

The article is super long, but worth it. He's a cerebral guy who set inhuman expectations for himself, totally neglected his emotional health living up to those expectations, and used up all of his energy getting back in 2018. By the time he had to do it again in 2019, he tried, but discovered he couldn't.

I mean why wait over a week especially since he had told a bunch of people already?

That was in the Colts' interest as well. They'd be happy to keep him around hoping he'd change his mind, plus they can prepare all of the retirement PR work/media stuff to give him a proper sendoff, and start exploring trade options before the other 31 teams know. No downside. Luck got say goodbye to pro football, which had to be cathartic as hell.

It was in everyone's interest for him to give notice instead of walking out same-day or the Colts having to put out a press release telling people when Andrew Luck's last day is, which would be a completely needless circus.

What he did to Andrew Luck's retirement is one of the all time petty moves. I don't know if he's been steadily going more Jurrah, but yeah he's got priors.

I mean he did the same with Peyton basically when they released him to go after luck. Basically said the Manning era wasn't as successful and implied they wanted to right the wrongs of that with Luck. He's always been a bit ungrateful
