They'd be happy to keep him around hoping he'd change his mind, plus they can prepare all of the retirement PR work/media stuff to give him a proper sendoff, and start exploring trade options before the other 31 teams know. No downside. Luck got say goodbye to pro football, which had to be cathartic as hell.
