So the brilliant idea by the Ravens FO is to not pay Lamar Jackson in hopes he plays on the Tag, makes a SB run, Wins it all.

Only to then tell the fanbase and Lamar, We sure AF are not paying you now even though you've proven you're worth it and want more?

Sound logic.

Lamar won't play a single down as a Raven before week 11 if forced to sign that tag. Nor should he.

What is wrong with trying to win a superbowl?  Not every qb can win 5, even 1 is pretty amazing.  He definitely needs some receivers to help that cause.  OBJ is clearly not a long term investment, he obviously can't stay healthy, so I can only assume they are going all in on this year.

I think the Ravens suspect from firsthand experience that Lamar Jackson is likely to have a short career and so they want to win one while he is still healthy and in his prime which might be a very narrow window.   Nothing wrong with that.  OBJ, if healthy, could put up a big season, and he can play jump ball with the off schedule Lamar Jackson.

This move was clearly an olive branch to Lamar:

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports Lamar Jackson "was actively recruiting" Odell Beckham Jr. to the Ravens.

According to Rapoport, there was "a clear understanding" throughout Beckham's negotiation that the quarterback throwing to him next season is "probably gonna be Lamar." While Jackson is still in search of a new contract, it sounds like the signing of Beckham will be enough to satisfy Jackson for the 2023 season -- whether he plays on the franchise tag or under a new contract.

Ravens, the team where the WR end their career.

Nah, the track record is pretty good with getting a couple productive seasons out of guys who used to be great but went out of demand.

This is the team that never gets young WRs careers' off the ground.

Eagles kind of already do that. They push the date it auto-voids back just a little bit, so then instead of it voiding, they have the option to cut the player, designate them a June 1st cut, and spread the cap hit over 2 years. It isn't always reported well because most media outlets don't actually understand how the cap works, if we're being honest. But they've already done that with, IIRC, Fletcher Cox and Jason Kelce. For sure Cox, at least. I know the newest deals for Kelce and Graham allow for the same. Either a June 1st cut or a post June 1st retirement.

When the cap goes up 5-7% a year, that means they're getting 10% off on every player they cut this way more or less. That's smart as hell.
