SemperFeist
Cutting Mattison will save the Vikings $3.35M in cap space, and leave them with a $1.25M dead cap hit.

vike daddy
In 2023, Mattison signed a two-year, $7 million deal. His $3.3 million base salary in 2024 includes $2.75 million in fully-guaranteed money. They’ll be on the hook for that amount, less whatever he earns elsewhere. The Vikings are surely hoping Mattison will earn that much somewhere else, or close to it. That’s why they’re doing it now. They want him to be on the market early in the process. The contract includes no trigger that would have forced them to move now in order to avoid cash obligations or to minimize cap consequences. They’re banking on an offset by giving someone else a chance to sign him. https://www.nbcsports.com/nfl/profootballtalk/rumor-mill/news/vikings-will-release-rb-alexander-mattison Brz doing his brz'ing thing.... Cearbhall
It's good the team didn't feel compelled to keep Mattison because of that guaranteed salary. Signing him to that contract was a mistake. At least they aren't compounding the mistake by clogging up the roster spot with his presence. The team is going to have to bring another RB in to fill that spot, however. They don't have enough talent at RB. I already felt like Chandler and Akers (when healthy) were the top two backs. The team needs someone that will knock at least one of those two down a spot on that ranking. Mattison wasn't that guy. I am glad it isn't Mattison that will be using that roster spot.

This report doesn’t appear to be accurate. Per multiple other sources, including the Star Tribune, Mattison’s base salary didn’t become guaranteed until the 3rd day of the league year. Therefore the only money the Vikings are on the hook for is his signing bonus.

VikeManDan
Mattison had a golden opportunity and essentially did nothing with it. Best of luck to him at his next stop, he is a solid #2 but not a lead dog.

swede700
Quote As expected, the Kansas City Chiefs officially placed the franchise tag on cornerback L'Jarius Sneed. Sneed still has permission to seek a trade despite the designation. A person with direct knowledge of the situation told USA TODAY Sports that the Minnesota Vikings, Indianapolis Colts, Tennessee Titans, New England Patriots, Detroit Lions, Atlanta Falcons and Jacksonville Jaguars have expressed interest in the Chiefs corner. https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/nfl/2024/03/05/nfl-free-agency-rumors-saquon-barkley/72859023007/

I believe so. However, before the trade is consummated, he'll have to sign the tender so that he is technically under contract with the trading team.
