See I think a lot of people see it the opposite way. People defend Fackrell BECAUSE he's a Packer. They make excuses for him because he's a Packer. If he wasn't and someone said sign this man, you wouldn't hear anything except "that guy sucks."

I think that's exactly the point. There's so little difference between all these guys that some defend Fackrell because he's a Packer and some want anyone else because they just want change. It all points in the same direction: there's not a huge upgrade out there waiting for us to pick it up. Switch Orchard with Fackrell and the same people would probably be arguing the same points, just with different players.

Well let me put it this way then, everyone listed on that available OLB list other than Simon sucks.

Problem solved. Sign Simon. For the record, I like Orchard too. Not flashy but causes way more disruption than Fackrell. Not a great finsher but at least he's doing something.

“Problem solved”.  That’s the crux of this latest debate.  We’ll know soon enough if we truly have a problem or not.  I’m in wait and see mode myself.

Maybe he could play SAM in the 4-3 under.  If he's protected by Wilkerson or Lowry from those big, mean offensive tackles he could run around a bit and be fairly disruptive.

Even then, he struggled to disengage from tight ends this preseason.

He just lacks that functional strength needed to hold the edge.  And it's not like he's a pass rush specialist either.  He needs to be an off-ball linebacker.

Even if you think all of that is B.S., a 5th OLB is necessary given the injury history of our 2 starters.

That’s my biggest concern also - how long will Matthews and Perry last before they’re inevitably injured again?

I think most reasonable folks would agree that those guys AT THEIR BEST, are better than are 4th OLB, but they're not that consistent that they're at their best that often.

John Simon might be more injury prone than Nick Perry and Clay Matthews

Means has played a total of 15 games in the last 5 years.

Ealy had all the physical talent in the world and can't stick on a roster, and edge needy teams are telling him no thanks for some reason.

So at their best, they're better than our 4th OLB, but at their worst, they're worse than our 4th OLB... on average, I'm not sure.

As for Anthony Zettle... I love the guys freaking effort! LOVE IT! ... I'm not quite sure why he's a FA right now, other than I know he's physically a bit limited and sorta a tweener. I'd love for them to bring him in and take a look... with the Lions, he gave the Vikings some troubles. But I freaking LOVED his motor in college and if he still has that, I'll always be willing to give him a look... but in college he's best spot was penetrating DT that struggled to hold the run, in the pros, it was sorta run stuffing edge guy. He's a tweener, and might be harder to find the right spot to use him, but if you can, out of college I would say, he'll give you all he's got with good leverage and relentless effort.

Ealy is an enigma to me. The Pats traded a high draft pick for him then quickly cut him. He's been bouncing team to team ever since. He's young, healthy, and like you said has the physical tools. Would love to have been a fly on the wall when he was being released by all these teams.

Saddest part of that play, was the tackle barely swiped him with his left hand.  Unbelievably embarrassing.  Hopefully that was rock bottom and he’s on a steady climb up out of that hole.

Pancaked by a TE...

Sat down by an OT.

Dunno what the hell this is.

Buuuutttt he has 5 sacks in 2 years!!!!

You don't say...

Basically, if he can swipe your hands on that speed rush and the QB is in a 7 step drop, then yeah, he can help the D as a pass rusher.

The difference between a 5th year player on his 5th team with 2 sacks in his career and Kyler Fackrell isn't going to decide anything.

We're just nitpicking and wanting to get excited about someone new.

Fackrell is a fine 4th OLB, color me completely concerned when Matthews or Perry get hurt, and if they did I'd be totally expecting Steven Means to look over his head in the same matter I would Fackrell.

Sorry couldn't help myselfxD
