At two the Giants preferred QB will not be there if they trade out

If they aren’t willing to take that QB at 2 then that says it all. They have their rankings, just because they one guy ranked above another doesn’t mean they like just one. Just like if you’re picking at 9, it’s very unlikely that the guy you’re picking is not the #1 rated on their board.

Trade all that for a RB? I would hope not but its possible

Nelson to the Colts would be huge for them

This was the trade for Ricky Williams in the 1999 draft. That's why Ive been trying to tell people, if teams are really buying into the Barkley hype, then QB's aren't the only players that are gonna be traded up for.

Traded to New Orleans

Traded to Washington[13]

  • 1999 first round pick (12th overall, later traded to Chicago, used to select Cade McNown)[14]
  • 1999 third round pick (71st overall, later traded to Chicago, used to select D'Wayne Bates)[14]
  • 1999 fourth round pick (107th overall, used to select Nate Stimson)[15]
  • 1999 fifth round pick (144th overall, later traded to Chicago, used to select Khari Samuel)[16]
  • 1999 sixth round pick (179th overall, later traded to Denver, used to select Desmond Clark)[15]
  • 1999 seventh round pick (218th overall, later traded to Denver, used to select Billy Miller)[15]
  • 2000 first round pick (2nd overall, used to select LaVar Arrington)[13]
  • 2000 third round pick (64th overall, used to select Lloyd Harrison)[13]

Just so it's clear, the at least Washington ended up with Champ Bailey in the first round that year, otherwise those picks are just ugly lol. Washington traded up to 7 from 12 in that Chicago trade.

If you are picking at 2 you have your best case scenario QB in mind and then you have the best worst case scenario in mind just in case. You trade out and there is no way you are getting a QB before the Browns, Jets, and Broncos. So you went from Darnold and/or Rosen to maybe the 4th choice assuming the Bills don’t end up ahead of you, then you are likely losing out on Mayfield and Jackson.

And honestly, if you really aren’t going to take your pick of QB and are willing to trade out of possibly the 4 best in the draft, screw it take Barkley or Chubbs instead of trading out.

A hidden part to this deal - FANTASTIC deal for the Jets.   We keep talking about how Ballard killed this and he did.   He got exactly the spot to still get an elite nonQB difference maker and got 3 top 50 picks.  The book value alone said 2.37 was enough.  We know that’s only a guide but he still got max value while staying high enough to get 1 of the 2 guys he absolutely has to target.

But for the Jets - they didn’t pay a 2019 1st.   So even if they likely miss the playoffs they keep their elite 2019 top 10 or top 15 pick.   And while they overpaid in theory - keep in mind they got SEA’s 2nd with Sheldon Richardson.  A guy they knew wasn’t going to stay when they were ready to contend.   Without that pick they can’t beat BUF’s offer of 1.12 1./22 and others.

The Richardson deal was a nobrainer.   But it just paid off again as the key piece that  allowed the Jets to move up.   Given he was a goner this was a fantastic domino effect from the SEA trade.

Both teams got what they wanted and Ballard still gets to get Nelson/Chubb.  Jets keep their 2019 1st and used Richardson to secure the move to get QB.   Then it only becomes 2 2nds plus Richardson.

Its rare but this is the case where I tip my cap to both GM’s given the context.   They both killed it.

I can’t understand the rationale behind the Giants passing on a QB. You have maybe 2 years left of Eli.

You have a franchise caliber QB available at 2 in Darnold / Rosen. The giants are a bad team with or without Barkley. They need to rebuild.

They pass on a QB if they feel like the ones available aren't good enough. I have a feeling they feel Darnold is a franchise QB but no one else is. If he goes 1, they might not take their next best QB but a guy they feel has HOF potential, like Barkley.

Its important to remember there is no Andrew Luck in this class. Every one of these QBs has flaws, some more serious than the others. There's potential that Rosen's injury history is too concerning to take him at 2, or Mayfield's antics are too much to have him in New York, or Allen's accuracy issues are too ingrained for them to be corrected,  in which case you don't take one of them just because they are a QB. It is all going to depend on evaluations. QB is the most important position no doubt, but the Giants need help almost everywhere. If they feel that Barkley or Nelson is a hall of famer and none of the QBs available are going to be better than average, you take the hall of famer.

There are scenarios where the Giants stay put at 2, don't take a QB, and it makes sense.
