Simply 'Wow!'

Packers (4-4-1) at Seahawks (4-5), Thursday

Opening line: Seahawks, -2.5 points

There are a lot of reasons to like the Seahawks in this game, starting with the fact that they're nearly unbeatable at home in primetime. Since Pete Carroll took over as coach in 2010, the Seahawks have played 16 home primetime games and they've gone 14-2 straight-up and 13-3 against the spread (ATS). The Seahawks are also 4-1 ATS in their past five games. The Packers also have to make an ugly road trip on a short week that no team has EVER been able to overcome. No team flying two or more time zones west for a Thursday game has ever won or covered since the current version of Thursday Night Football came into existence in 2006. Over the past 12 years, this has happened a total of 11 times and the team flying west has gone 0-11 both straight-up and ATS. This includes a Week 4 game from this year where the Vikings didn't win or cover against the Rams in Los Angeles. One reason to like that Packers is that they've won three straight against the Seahawks (3-0 ATS), although all three of those games were played in Green Bay.

Yeah, Thursday night games are a whole bunch of BS, and the NFL should be ashamed of creating such a distinct advantage for the Seahawks.  It's why ever since the Patriots loss, I've been counting this as our last loss on the season because it's so unfair to expect a win tonight.  It's a lot to expect a win traveling that far on a normal week.  On a short week it jeopardizes the integrity of the parity the NFL so desperately wants to create.

The Saints, Rams, Patriots and every team in the NFL would be underdogs in the same situation tonight.

If the Packers win, it's going to be a whole lot of, "Meh, the Seahawks are 4-5" bull crap.  If they lose, it's going to be a whole lot of, "The Packers can't even beat the 4-5 Seahawks."

It's not that simple.  The NFL is full of players in peak physical condition that need time to recover.  A lot of people don't really get this.  naturally-occurring HGH kicks in during sleep, and if you're losing sleep over traveling, you're literally weaker than you would be otherwise.  There's also the damage your body goes through during NFL games, which need time to heal.

It's why I wish we just put in backups for the entire fourth quarter against the Dolphins and sent our starters home to rest.  This is going to be a tough game.  I know we're capable of beating the Seahawks, but this game is asking a hell of a lot from our players.

If we come out with the win, it will probably be the most underrated win of the season for any team.

If the NFL wants to play Thursday night games, I think they should:

Add one week to the season, with each team still playing 16 games.

Give the teams playing the Thursday game a bye the week before the game, in addition to the usual bye that occurs each season.

Drop the opening week Thursday game.

This way the teams have enough time to recover before the game, and the added time before and after the game allows players more time in season to try and get/stay healthy.  Might make the quality of the Thursday game better as well.

Just a thought.

From The Athletic:

"If football’s emotional spectrum ranges from apoplexy to euphoria, then Green Bay Packers special teams coordinator Ron Zook has operated at both poles and everywhere in between this season. His units are entirely unpredictable.

There was a beautiful blocked punt-turned-touchdown against the Minnesota Vikings in the home opener. There was the agony attached to five missed kicks by Mason Crosby against the Detroit Lions. There was a poorly defended fake punt against the Los Angeles Rams followed by a shank from rookie JK Scott and the inexplicable fumble by return man Ty Montgomery later in the same game. There was a foolish roughing penalty on Robert Tonyan against the New England Patriots. And then, against the Miami Dolphins, the Packers executed an impeccable fake punt of their own while blanketing one of the most dangerous returners in the league.

No phase of the game can torment and elate the way Zook’s group does.

Praying for Good - Zook tonite. No roster move on Trevor Davis ?

I saw photos of the players getting off the plane in Seattle Tuesday night and Davis was in one of the pictures.  I haven't heard any roster move, tho.

Good thing he's so consistent and never makes mistakes. Should be right on point in his first game back in Seattle.

So long as Davis doesn't Plaxico himself, he'll be our most consistent ST guy.

He may very well be on Kick, Punt, Kick Return, and Punt Return in the primary role in each of them.

Trevor provides an immediate lift to special teams. He averaged double the punt return average and over 8 yards more per kick return. Everyone can hate on Trevor for a few gaffes fair catching kicks but he is a top level return man in this league and solid gunner.

For as much as our special teams have sucked we should all want him back.
