tom cody
Given the money Donaldson is rumored to want I'd expect the # to go up. Lots of money being spent this winter.

Forge
1 minute ago, Leader said: Are they though? Based on spending or resources? No, I was being facetious. Revenue is down, but the team sucks, so this makes sense. When they want to spend, they can spend at the top without problems. I think that they are waiting for the dead weight to come off the books (Posey, Crawford, Belt, Cueto, Shark all come off the books in the next two years. Nearly 100 million a season between those 5)

Those are certainly similar teams with similar markets and spending capabilities.
flyguy1609
guessing the market should heat up in the new few days? 35 days til pitchers and catchers report. can see Donaldson puig, ozuna type FA's signing but I also didn't think machado and Harper would sign so late. Slateman
So how does trading a player and cash work with the luxury tax? If player X has 4 years, 100 million left and Team X trades him to Team Y and 20 million, how do they work it? Is it one lump sum, or is it divided equally by year? Does Team X pay 5 million a season for the rest of the contract, or 20 million up front? Also, does Player X's CBT number get prorated, so it would now be 20 million against the tax for four seasons? Or is it the first season counts 5 million against the tax and the rest is 25 million per?
