Taking a deeper look into Goff 400yd passing day: 6-6 (for 119yds) on passes traveling at least 15yds downfield 11-11 (for 182yds and a td) on 3rd down, the most such completions without and incompletion by any QB since 2016.
tyler735
Should be interesting to see how Goff finishes the season. His past 5 games he has 4 touchdowns, 7 interceptions, 4 fumbles, and a 79.8 QB Rating. Not exactly what you'd wanna see from a QB making so much money. His QB Rating for the year is currently 26th in the league with Sam Darnold, Daniel Jones, Kyle Allen, Ryan Fitzpatrick, Mason Rudolph, Andy Dalton, and Baker Mayfield below him, not exactly good company to be in at the moment.

Pure TD/INT ratio is SUPER overrated. Will make Aaron Rodgers look like he is having a GREAT season or made Brissett look better than his actual play. Goff has looked good the last two weeks. Better than he's looked at any point this season and quite frankly, better than he's looked since mid-way of last season.

Not really though as with any stat it's not a be all end all, but can definitely help paint a picture how a QB is performing. If a QB continues to turn over the ball at a rate Goff has this season, that is simply poor QB play. To say that he has looked better the past 2 weeks is an incredibly low bar. He still had as many turnovers as touchdowns last week. I mean Aaron Rodgers is having a good season, he doesn't turn the ball over, he is doing a solid job of getting his team into scoring positions, and the Packers are 10-3 this year. Aaron Rodgers is indeed having a good year....You look purely off his TD/INT ratio and you would think he is having an MVP type of season, but that just isn't the case. Sure, you want a QB to protect the ball and Goff had one terrible INT last week, but the second INT was damn near like a punt where there was no harm in it. He's being decisive with his decision making and throwing some dimes. Obviously he is a flawed QB that hasn't been good for over a 16 game stretch, but just saying he is showing some nice signs as of late. Broncofan
Goff needs a good OL/play-action, as he relies on timing/rhythm to play well. He's not a make-it-happen type QB. When it is there, he's really good. When it isn't, he struggles. It's not a secret anymore. The reality is there are literally 4-5 guys who can pull a miracle play regularly from a bad D mismatch - Wilson, Rodgers, Mahomes, Watson & Lamar. That's it. Wentz is close, but his accuracy with pressure isn't there. Brady's lost that ability a long time ago. Brees is the same, just has a great OL and play designer who creates winning plays (and credit him for exploiting the matchups that help him succeed, just that he's not creating the advantage). Jameis actually belongs with the 1st group at being able to pull miracles out of his *ss, but you can't put him there since he makes 2-3 Bortles-like plays a game at a minimum that more than neutralize the great plays (Allen's the other guy who's got the skills to be that kind of player, but also misses routine plays that drive you nuts - but at least it's not a TO-fest like it is with Jameis). As a contrast, Matt Ryan's OL has gone to absolute crap....and look, he's struggling. Of course, someone will say it's most Ryan - but really, it's a reflection of the type of QB he is. Goff falls squarely into the Ryan profile - takes advantage when you give him time/right matchup, but can't create on his own. Honestly, outside of a handful of QB's, that's how it is for even established QB's - the only other guy missing from the able-to-create-miracles-out-of-crap group is Big Ben. But even in the top-half of each year's QB list you probably have almost half the guys who are succeeding from system/cast first (Dak, Brees, Cousins, JimmyG, Brissett, Carr - the last 2 being fringe top-half players, the first 3 being top 10 guys). When the OL doesnt' protect, or the cast around the QB doesn't win - they struggle. Same applies for Goff. The same reason that Kirk Cousins, JimmyG & Tannehill (2H-only, obv) are all succeeding right now is why Goff is succeeding of late - the O has balance again, the run game is successful - and then play-action has time and has separation, and that's where Goff kills it. What is notably different is the power scheme LAR has switched to calls for more short-intermediate stuff than in the high-flying days, since it's using 12 personnel (and Reynolds instead of Kupp more when in 3-wide early on). Add in that McVay is exploiting mismatches by design a lot better (why Higbee is eating the last 2 weeks, they faced the worst & 4th worst TE D in ARI & SEA). Credit the same for Kubiak (the real brains there) & Cousins, Shanny & Jimmy G right now, and TEN/Tannehill. The common thread? They're successful when their cast succeeds - they don't create as much on their own as a passer (Tannehill's runs being the notable exception). There's nothing wrong with that. As for QB salaries, they are just a reflection of how bad QB is in general. To keep pointing to it really reflects to the gross overvaluation of QB as a whole - not really to each player. It's a fair statement in a vacuum that player X isn't worth 25-30M+ - no one is, though, outside of those top 5 players. But it's the market. It is what it is (and why teams always search for the holy grail franchise QB at rookie-deal prices). Lol yeah I suppose 1 week makes the rest of the games obsolete. I remember when Fitzmagic went off against my Saints last season early on in the season. Everyone remembers Fitzmagic's 2018 season for that 1 big week against the Saints, not getting benched, and playing like crap pretty much the rest of the season. /s

He's had an amazing OL and mcvay has schemed open guys. He's great when he has time and his WRs are open lol I keep saying that Goff is who the rams drafted Bradford to be. Stylistically, they are similar except Goff doesn't have the injury history Edited December 11, 2019 by N4L

Goff was dealing against Seattle, and it could have been worse if McVay didn't take his foot off the gas. His first INT was a miscommunication with Woods; the second shouldn't have been thrown. Other than that he was nearly flawless. Give credit where it's due.
SmittyBacall
@Broncofan Well said. Like I said during the Seattle game, if you give Goff time and some semblance of a running game, he can sling it as good as anyone in the NFL. With that, the contract doesn't look so bad. Without it, you can see why people hate on him so much. Edited December 11, 2019 by SmittyBacall
