2018 BENGALS DRAFT CLASS

1-21.) Billy Price [C/Ohio State] - D-

The team was desperate for a starting center and had their eye on Frank Ragnow (who went a pick before 21 to Detroit). Drafted while injured, Price has been unable to stay healthy over the course of his career dealing with multiple debilitating injuries. When he has played, he’s looked terrible. The only saving grace of this pick is if his terrible play was due to playing injured. Best case scenario he’s a solid starting guard and a backup center, but I’m not holding my breath. This is why you don’t pick for need, kids.

2-54.) Jessie Bates [S/Wake Forest] - B+

As advertised, he’s a rangy, ball-hawking safety with great instincts who struggles taking on the run. He hasn’t really had a chance to flourish because our defense as a whole has been terrible since he’s been drafted, but there is a lot of potential here to remain an above average starter, possibly more. He’s one our our few young key cogs on defense.

3-77.) Sam Hubbard [DE/Ohio State] - B+

Another really good pick up in the third. Sam is a high energy, extremely solid football player who does he job really well, while remaining unspectacular. Does the little things really well; sniffs out screens, bats balls, etc. Plays the run stout and is a effective pass rusher who can get after the QB. Every DC wants a Sam Hubbard.

3-78.) Malik Harrison [LB/Texas] - F

An elite athlete who was purely an developmental prospect, but never developed and washed out of the team quickly. Couldn’t even latch on as a special teamer. Swing and a miss.

4-112.) Mark Walton [RB/Miami] - F

Weird pick at the time considering we really didn’t need an RB this early, but was deemed too good to pass up. Don’t mind the logic, hate the player. Terrible character that’s had multiple run ins with the law. Cut after an eventful offseason. Probably out of the league soon/now.

5-151.) Davontae Harris [CB/Illinois State] - D+

He never got a chance here (was waived early) in a crowded CB room but from what I’ve read he actually turned into a pretty good Bronco and is/was a starting caliber corner. D+ for the Bengals but good pick up for Denver.

5-158.) Andrew Brown [DL/Virginia] - C+

Rotational lineman who still has some upside (he was a 5-star recruit). It will be interesting to see how he develops moving forward. Nice to get contributors this late.

5-170.) Darius Phillips [CB/Western Michigan] - B+

Came out of absolute nowhere at the end of last season and balled out. Picked off 4  passes (!) in just 109 snaps (!) - that’s essentially two games worth of action. He should get more playing time this season and hopefully his read hot 2019 carries over. Great pick so far this late. Ball skills as advertised. Can play inside and out. He’s also a prolific return man and could see punts this season. Tempted to give an A here but we haven’t seen enough of a sample size.

7-249.) Logan Woodside [QB/Toledo] - F

Waived quickly. Currently with Tennessee.

7-252.) Rod Taylor [G/Ole Miss] - F

Current XFLer.

7-253.) Auden Tate [WR/Florida State] - B+

It looks as though we have something here. Had a mini-break out in 2019 and played really well when called upon. Purely a big possession receiver, he has unbelievable ball skills and catch radius. He should fit well with Burrow and will have a role this season as he is a menace on back shoulder throws and will bully smaller corners. He will fight for snaps with Ross behind Green, Boyd and Higgins, but will almost certainly have a redzone role. Steal this late. Check him out against Baltimore late in the season:

Overall: Really good draft looking back at it now. Two solid starters in Bates and Hubbard, and solid contributors in Phillips and Tate (possibly Brown). That’s really all the returns you can ask for in a draft class.  I’d give it a solid B for now, with potential for more.

I'd feel much better about this draft if they had kept Harris.  And it's better than the 2017 draft, that gave us Mixon, Lawson and Wilson, but watched Elliott get cut and flourish elsewhere.  Eerily similar actually.  Another injured FRP, one that got away and flourished, but several role players and a few key contributors.

I'm still mad they waived him and kept that obvious junky CB BW Webb.  It was pretty apparent in preseason that Harris had the stuff to be a starting corner, and we already knew Webb didn't.  Yet, Harris was put out because he was a 5th round pick.

Dumb.

Also, i agree with your grades.

That was an obvious mistake at the time made even more glaring in retrospect.  I think they were trying to stash him on the practice squad.  Impressive to Getty both Harris and Phillips in that draft add both guys can play.

Price looked okay at center late in his rookie year. I  still think he's going to be an okay player, just not living up to the draft spot.  Too bad,  he's the type that can be a real locker room leader.

Bengals

1. John Ross WR : D+
I was exciting about the pick at the time. A speedster who could help take the top off the defense and provide an exciting new toy to the offense. While he has flashed at times, he has been unable to stay healthy. Mahomes being selected a pick later makes this look even worse.

2. Joe Mixon RB : A+
At the time Mixon was a controversial pick, but no one could deny his talent. Since then he has been one of the top backs in the league.

3. Jordan Willis DE : D+

Was a rotational piece for a while, but never really lived up to expectations.

4. Carl Lawson DE : A-

Lawson has been a stud when healthy off the edge. He was a great find in round 4.

4. Josh Malone WR: D+

Malone has some early production but never really became the consistent deep threat they wanted him to be.

4. Ryan Glasgow DT: C
Has been a solid rotational piece on the Dline.

5. Jake Elliott K : F

Flashed in preseason but was cut for Fat Randy Bullock. Is now a solid kicker for the Eagles.

5. JJ Dielman C : F

Was cut, I don’t know where he is now.

6. Jordan Evans LB : C-

Linebacker depth and solid special teams.

6. Brandon Wilson S/KR : A

A late round gem. Wilson has been a tremendous special teams stud.

7. Mason Schreck TE : C-

Still hanging around on the practice squad, will compete for a roster spot this year.

Was never a fan of the Ross pick,  but more that I don't generally like spending 1st round picks on a receiver. We'll see if he belongs this year with a new qb.

Still, Dielman is the only useless pick of the bunch and I believe he was lost to injury. Not a bad draft for us. Mixon is a beast and we added a few rotational defensive linemen and a few guys who are special teams contributors. Solid C for me.

1. Charles Harris (DE) - Rotational guy, 3.5 career sacks in 41 games. Waiver pickup Taco Charlton had more production in 10 games than Harris has in his whole career, enough said. Probably going to be cut by the end of training camp. D

2. Raekwon McMillan (LB) - Missed all of his rookie year with a knee injury. Has been our starting MLB since then. Tremendous run stopper but has his issues in coverage. Solid pick, not great. B

3. Cordrea Tankersley (CB) - Has barely seen the field because of knee injuries. When he did see some snaps he was burned quite often. Will probably not be on the roster by the end of training camp. D-

5. Isaac Asiata (G) - PS player for most of his time in the league. Played a few snaps as a backup and was released. Retired from football last year. F

5. Davon Gochaux (DT) - Been starting at DT for the past two seasons. Very pleasant surprise for a 5th rounder. Great against the run and a staple on the DLine. B+

6. Vincent Taylor (DT) - Rotational guy his first two seasons. Showed a lot of promise as a run stopper but had conditioning/weight issues. Was cut in training camp last season to the surprise of many who thought he still had some potential. Has been on the Bills since then I believe. D

7. Isaiah Ford (WR) - Spent his first two seasons on the PS, was released and re-signed a few times. Had a chance to prove himself last season and did surprisingly well for a 7th rounder. Will get a chance to compete for snaps this season. C

Myles Garrett, DE - A

One of the best in the league. Just needs to eliminate the dumb stuff he does on the field... besides the obviously stupid helmet incident, he jumps offsides a ton. But still, he's an absolutely dominant DE.

Jabrill Peppers, S - B:

Mediocre first season playing out of position, good his second season, and was a key part in acquiring OBJ.

David Njoku, TE - B-:

Kind of hard to grade at this point, IMO. Anywhere from a C+ to a B- seems fair. Raw entering the league and still only 23. Has shown flashes of being really good - capable of making insanely good plays and then drops an easy pass right to him. Most Browns fans expected him to breakout last year, but injuries derailed his season along with seemingly getting into Freddie's dog house. The new FO still has faith in him as they recently picked up his fifth-year option. Stefanski loves his TEs so hopefully this will be the year that Njoku finally breaks out.

DeShone Kizer, QB - D-:

One of the worst QBs I've ever seen. Certainly wasn't ready, but he made mistakes that I don't think can be even accounted for as rookie mistakes. There were multiple occasions where he would throw a pass with no receiver in the area and 3-4 defenders. Had a ton of physical talent, but simply didn't have the mental makeup to be good and was totally anti-clutch. Just a really dumb QB. Only reason he's not getting an F is because we were able to trade him to Green Bay for Randall, who was really good his first year for us and pretty average his second year.

Larry Ogubjobi, DT - B:

Above average starting DT. Pretty good for a third round pick.

Howard Wilson, CB - F:

Never saw the field due to injuries.

Roderick Johnson, OT - D-:

Didn't do anything for us, but I think he's become a decent backup OL for Houston.

Caleb Brantley, DT - D:

Showed some promise at first but then didn't make the team his second year. Now he's on the Redskins, but I have no idea how well he's played for them.

Zane Gonzalez, K - D-:

He gets a failing grade for us, but I know he's turned into a good kicker for the Cardinals. He was just awful when he was on the Browns.

Matthew Dayes, RB - C-:

I actually liked him, but was cut a couple of years ago due to the talent in front of him at RB. Surprised he's not on a team because he seemed like he could become a really solid backup RB with the ability to be a solid returner.

My god, 2017 was rough for Denver:

1.20 - Garett Bolles OT - C - He is at times a walking flag but his run blocking is very good and when he doesnt get inside his own head, he is a capable pass blocker. Overall he is about an average LT, which isnt horrible but isnt great either.

2.51 - DeMarcus Walker DL/EDGE - D - Initially we tried to turn him into a stand up rusher, but he never had close to the build or athleticism for that. Then we tried to turn him into a base 34 end, but he never had close to the build or strength for that. He is a top 50 pick that has a single role, as a DL rush specialist on clear passing downs. And he isnt great at that either. Horrible value and a clear, telegraphed bad fit from the picks announcement.

3.82 - Carlos Henderson WR - F - Half wit speedster that couldnt understand the LA Tech playbook much less come close to learning an NFL caliber route tree. Elway wanted to copy KC and reached on another telegraphed bust who ran about 2 routes in college and was heralded as being slower than a turtle in taking on a playbook. Washed out with like 3 catches, as a near top 75 pick. Just horrible.

3.101 - Brendan Langley DB - F - Another telegraphed bust who wasnt that great in college, was raw as hell coming from a small school, stood out a bit in the underwear Olympics and somehow caught Elway's eye. Similar to Henderson, there wasnt a coverage scheme in the universe that he couldnt manage to flub. We tried to move him to WR, but instead he moved out of the league.

5.145 - Jake Butt TE - D - I give this a D rather than F because I understand and appreciate a risky pick, Butt was heralded as a Day 2 guy before his injury but in the end, it hasnt panned out. Missed about 85% of the games his first 3 years and didnt look good in the 15% he played. Cooked and should medically retire.

5.172 - Isaiah McKenzie WR/RS - F - He has carved a niche in Buffalo, but the kid was hot garbage in Denver. We asked him to do one thing, return punts, and he managed more muffs than a Playboy Mansion party.

6.203 - DeAngelo Henderson RB - D - I wont give late round picks bad grades simply because they wash out, they should be expected to wash out, and I liked Henderson as a COP back. But he never put it together and couldnt get the game to slow down to him after playing college against poor competition.

7.253 - Chad KElly QB - D+ - The second highest grade of this draft is to a QB who never started for Denver and was cut after breaking and entering a house dressed as a cowboy after almost certainly taking too much MDMA at one of Von Millers parties....thats how bad 2017 was for the Broncos.

One of the best draft classes of the last decade. Jeez.

I guess you can argue the Chiefs is better as they got Mahomes whose just a ridiculous QB.

The Saints also owned the best class of the first decade, the famous 2006 class that started with Reggie Bush. Getting 10 year starters Zach Strief and Marques Colston in the 7th round was sick. It would have been even better if they had understood what the had in Rob Ninkovich. He did all his good years with the Patriots.
