The ref clearly felt that Collins' actions were threatening, and he did flich in response to those actions. There's a cause and there's an effect. And the cause are clearly Collins' actions. You want the ref not to react to Collins' actions? To stand his ground like a stone? That's not how human beings react. And distance is crucial in this situation. If Collins does that from afar it's not a deal, if it does that in the ref's face it's a big deal. You do realize it’s possible to both react/flinch and not eject the guy, right?

If it's a decision he can review on video and take 10 mins to decide, I could see him reverting it, but I could also see him maintaining it, since it was aggressive and reckless. Just don't do that AND throw a flag.

Ty21
That was one of the most hilarious things I’ve seen in football. I hate the lions but don’t think he should’ve been ejected or even penalized for goofing around but yeah you’re not allowed to touch refs regardless. Everyone except: the Refs, the League and the few fans who actually take the time to understand the rules. Does WOZ let people edit their survivor posts just a little or without nefarious intent ? no he doesn't- because those are THE RULES of the game. The Refs are and always have been a no-fly zone and its not open to interpretation like a pass interference or face mask call. The League has always taken this stance, its not a new thing. Refs are unprotected, smaller and unpadded - there is a zero tolerance rule in effect and every player and coach knows it. What you and others are arguing is "intent" or "extent" and neither one of those arguments hold any water in terms of touching a referee. You're leaning on common sense, which unfortunately plays no role in this scenario. Zero tolerance actually means zero, not "just a little" It's a tough pill to swallow. But his training and the rules are very clear on the topic and he would have been downgraded post-game if he didn't do exactly as he was trained to do. The player effed up, the Ref did what he was supposed to do and it was consistent with how the league wants to protect their Refs. Protecting the refs is sacrosanct in the NFL and 99.99% of the players manage to abide If you all want to mount an offseason discussion to change the rules to allow casual contact without an ejection, then you should. Good luck

Good luck (1) zero tolerance is not true, there is a lot of intentional contact between players and refs every game (2) he didn't initiate the contact The actual rule: Rule 12-3-1-E reads: “Unnecessary physical contact with a game official. Under no circumstance is a player allowed to shove, push, or strike an official in an offensive, disrespectful, or unsportsmanlike manner. The player shall be disqualified from the game.” Edited September 15, 2020 by incognito_man

incognito_man
Technically, that reads like an enumerated list. The rulebook specifies what is unnecessary contact (shove, push, strike). None of which Collins did. There isn't even a strict NFL CYA rulebook support of this nonsensical call this time.
