Jags sign Christian Kirk to a large contract

Every time a bad team way overpays for an average player in free agency, we have this exact thread. Everyone saying it was a bad signing and fans of the team defending it with the usual tropes ("We have money, it doesn't matter", "We just need talent", "We can't waste (young good player)'s prime/rookie contract years"). Then in 2 years the player is cut for not coming close to living up to the lofty expectations that come along with an albatross contract.

It goes both ways IMO

I mean, it depends on if he's catching that 50 yard touchdown to get the Jags their 11th win in the season on his way to a pro-bowl and playoff berth, or if he's catching that 50 yard touchdown to lose to the Titans by 14 instead of 21, for his 4th touchdown in 17 games.

Like, the Chiefs won a superbowl, and fans still gripe about how much we've paid Frank Clark and Sammy Watkins over the past few years. The price always still matters. It's entirely possible to be excited about the contribution and still understand it came in under the cost.

The major goal in putting together a football team is getting the most value for your money. Sometimes you give a little in one place and take a little in another, but ultimately, you need a certain performance per dollar. You can't get that handing out contracts like this, no matter how bad you start out.

Trust me, I watched the Giants hand out something like a hundred million in guaranteed last year and it didn't matter. Now we are stuck with Hoover flags this offseason because of it.

Team that sucks at position they overpaid for continues sucking at position they overpaid for. Basically.

How do you figure? You think Trevor going from Tavon Austin to Christian Kirk in the slot isn’t a massive upgrade? Not sure how you equate overpaid at a position to sucking at a position either.

I do not see what this has to do with what I said.

How does it not?

We see teams overpay like you said every year on free agents. That’s what free agency is every single year and yet people get “surprised” yet again. What does this contract being given out do to hurt the Jaguars? Does keeping their money and not spending it and saddling Trevor with worse weapons put us in a better position than where we now sit?

Seems like a crazy overpay. Why not trade for Amari Cooper? It's not like they couldn't have offered a better draft pick for a much better player on a better contract.  Or spend 25 mil to get Terron Armstead and let Robinson walk? Jags look like they don't know what they're doing. If they are going to overpay, at least overpay good players rather than average ones.

Yep. Though we have seen teams eventually turn it around. The Jags did a few years ago. It is a massive overpay but if they start winning, no one will care. Lol

"Jaguars don't draft anyone worth paying so we have to overpay"

Could have
WR: Allen Robinson, Allen Lazard
WR: DJ Chark, Lavishka Shenault
Slot: Dede Westbrook, Keelan Cole

just based off guys Jaguars have had brought in from college
