Given the extremely low cost its going to take to acquire Lance, there's really nothing wrong with taking the shot. He eventually has to play though. There are some clear inexperience issues that show up even in preseason.

Trey Lance should be a cautionary tale about drafting "traits" when there isn't tape to go along with it. Yes, injuries have definitely played their role, but third overall was always way too high for him.

Absolutely.  He never should have been drafted that high, and I even thought so at the time.  But, I think everyone thought that was a good place for him to go when he was.  It hasn't turned out that way, and there are many reasons for it...from injuries to where he was coming into the league (which was always going to be a concern since he hadn't even played a lot in college) to another QB pulling a Brady on him.  It doesn't mean he's washed up and that he's not worth a shot. It just depends upon the value in return.

Also a reason why the NFL should have a true developmental league.

Why did the Vikings not pickup Isaiah Simmons for a 7th round pick?  Dude is really skilled and could be a decent SS or could be a fine coverage LB type.  Probably not a fit for a 3/4 D but with Flores that soon will no longer be the base and I bet Flores would know how to use a guy like Simmons.  Stinks they did not get him and probably did not even attempt to.

Because they already have a bunch of young ILBs and safeties with promising ability, while the Giants clearly have a hole at MLB.

Please cite your source. Where has a Flores defense not had a 3-4 base?

New England before they got Judon was more of a 4/3 base because they did not really have the edge players, same with Miami when Flores first got there.  And they were always multiple and the edge player dropped down as a DE often and they played 5 DBs something New England does a lot currently and always have because they always are deep at DB with versatile safeties.

Giants signed Okereke and have Beavers opposite him and McFadden who had a good rookie year I thought.  Just is interesting Arizona gets rid of Simmons for pretty much nothing and he goes to the Giants, not sure putting him into a 3/4 ILB spot is a great idea and hopefully they play him as more of a safety.

And I thought the Cardinals were switching him to DB this off season and clearly they did not like how it turned out and got rid of him.  Then again they are going for more the Eagles D with a 4/3 base and moved Collins to edge and will play speedy LBs who can run and rush the passer.

Odd the Cardinals doing it because not like they are super deep.  Their corners are so bad though, easily the worst group in the entire NFL, so it does not really matter they will struggle just on that alone.  Marco Wilson is there only ok corner really and I bet Budda Baker wants to be traded out of that mess.  Gannon clearly did not like Simmons in his system though.

As for the Vikings, I would not have minded Simmons as a 3rd safety, Jay Ward has not looked great at all and sure Ivan Pace might start at ILB if Simmons can or even wants to play that spot, but that could also have worked or use him more as a coverage LB.  Collecting talented players is not the worst thing in the world.

Just say no to Clemson defenders.

AJ Terrell is a stud and Dexter Lawrence absolutely owns the Minnesota Vikings.  Christian Wilkins is really damn good also and Jayron Kearse is very solid since he left Minnesota.

But yes some have been bad, most notably Andrew Booth.

He cant even make it with Shanny why would he elsewhere? Whether people like it or not it most definitely means something when they would like to cut bait.

That line of thinking is flawed.  If you look into the thoughts of many 49ers fans they will tell you that Shanahan is a very good X’s and O’s Coach, but he is terrible at managing personnel.  He makes all of the decisions for that team when in reality he should leave some of the management decisions to John Lynch.  Shanahan was almost as big of a Sam Darnold fan as he was a Kirk Cousins fan.  Darnold is not as bad of a QB as many people think.  Darnold was very slow to develop because he was stuck on an Adam Gase led team for several years.  Trey Lance had just as good of an offseason as Sam Darnold, but the reality of the situation is that it was very unlikely that Lance would be kept around after the team had decided that Purdy was going to be their QB of the Future.  Lance’s cap hit is double what Darnold’s is and it was highly unlikely that they would keep that high of a cap hit as a QB3.  I believe that the main reason Lance wasn’t traded earlier in the offseason was in case Purdy took a long time to come back from his injury.

And yet Purdy came in and hasnt lost a game he started and finished and looked like he belonged in that offense. Trey Lance did not. You dont think they can and cant tell what they have in Lance from practice and preseason games? Argue semantics all you want but Brock Purdy is their starter now and Trey Lance is on the block. Thats all that needs to be said.

I dunno what to tell you if you dont think Lance and Darnold were going at it for the backup spot. If Lance was the better QB throughout the offseason Lance would be the backup, not Darnold, its that easy. A QB that they traded a plethora of draft capital for only 3 years ago their role on a team should not be in question if he was good enough to hang but in this case it isnt.

You really need to understand Kyle Shanahan to understand the situation he is in.  Shanahan is smart, but also very cocky, and arrogant, and cheap.  He is a good coach, but terrible at front office and roster management tasks.  He has picked all of the 49ers 1st round draft picks since he’s been the head coach and all have essentially been busts except for Nick Bosa.

Shanahan could very easily win with a healthy Trey Lance, but Purdy was always considered to be more pro ready.  Purdy was the hot hand and Shanahan saw that he could win with him.  Lance can be much better than Purdy, but there were some things that only come with reps and experience that Purdy was doing better than Lance.  That combined with the fact that Purdy was almost $10M cheaper than Lance the writing was pretty much on the wall.  Also you have to keep in mind that months ago when Shanahan said that Purdy was the unquestioned starter going forward that there was almost zero chance that he would backtrack on what he said because he is very full of himself.

A lot of what you are say would make logical sense to a reasonable person, but you have to keep in mind that a lot of the people in NFL front offices have big egos and there are a lot of politics amongst other things that go into these decisions.  Not every coach makes decisions based on talent or potential.  Many don’t even “play the best player.  Mike Zimmer was a perfect example of that.  He hated raw young rookies and he consistently play less talented veterans or players with bigger contracts over many of the younger guys.

Sure, why not? He's 940K this year, like 5.2M next year and wouldn't cost hardly anything. No reason to take a shot.
