Generally I'm more of a live and let live guy, but most people work hard for their money, so it seems silly to me to just let them take a bet their statistically significantly likely to lose without saying anything.

Same thing with lottery tickets, but at least then there's an entertainment factor for the guy who buys a Powerball ticket and gets to fantasize about hookers and coke.

I understand that @MKnight82 is saying you are making a mountain out of a molehill here, but the "you must be fun at parties" line is a common one for people who don't like what they're hearing because it doesn't align with their bad habits or beliefs.

I typically bite my tongue, but I have friends who spend crazy dollars (sometimes windfalls and inheritance) on trying to beat the market and if it's significant I try to say something.

Same with a large volume of sports betting, going to the casino, and even worse playing keno/lottery/scratch-offs. If possible I try to subtly make sure they understand they're in a long-term losing position.

Trying to beat the stock market is a form of gambling. Gambling is a form of entertainment and should be treated as such.

I said “you must be fun at parties” because he’s talking over me like a child trying to tell me things anyone with common sense would know.

I literally posted about a single stock because it’s an interesting one, a company with hundreds of millions of users and had a recent IPO.  If anyone reads any other news and sites about the stock market the Pinterest stock is quite a common topic.

I bite my tongue as much as I can in normal life, but it's just different when you're on the internet. In real life, I'm not going to ruin a relationship with someone over financial opinions. On the internet, if someone is debating making a decision that is a losing proposition long term, there isn't a reason to not say anything. Ultimately, it's their money and they can do what they want with it, but I'd rather see people make better choices with their money overall.

And the bold should be the disclaimer of this thread. None of us know what we're doing, and if we did, we'd be hoarding trade secrets instead of blabbing on a football forum about them.

Makes sense, I was really just chiming in with a rant that wasn't super related. Pinterest is an interesting buy for sure but I view it as high risk/high reward and more potential than anything.

@mission27 has said this over and over again, and we're coming up on a few years where he's missed, while the stock market is at an all time high.

The people who do this professionally, working 50 all the way to 100 hour weeks don't tend to guess right that much better than flipping a coin. Internet expects aren't any more likely to get that right.

Tbf I do work on Wall Street at P&P

Tbf

most of us have plenty of inside information we could trade on

It’s one thing to try to beat the market actively managing $5b while complying with SEC guidance on MNPI

its another thing for Joe Shmoe to make a few bucks on companies and industries he knows, on a small scale

use your brains gentleman...

Just need to get with the program and pull themselves up by their bootstraps.

Easy there Booker T Washington. ;)

TBH, that link was a great reminder of how blessed I am, especially during seasons like this where materialism runs rampant and keeping up with the Jones’s is a daily struggle.
