That's probably the only real reason nothing happened. I'll be shocked if whoever he signs with isn't a 3 year deal
CriminalMind
There is live after football. This will set him up to potentially live (with some nice fan recognition) in one of these 2 cities when he retires. Similar to what Lebron did, he will retire and live in LA going forward, and the people will love him

Maybe they could also tempt Eli out of retirement and have them duel it out for starter. I had a horrible thought for a moment that they might be able to prise Andrew Luck out of retirement, have to purge my mind of that now! Committing to a multi-year deal could have confined us to an unsettling purgatory at this point. I really don't get the argument that we should have 'done right by him', it's never been the Patriots MO.

If Brady does fall off the cliff its better to be the team that let him go in free agency than be the one that had to bench and cut him. At some point you want to be able and prepare for the next 5 years and not have to build your entire team on a year-by-year basis.
bigbadbuff
I’m sour as hell. Bills finally start to get good and TB12 leaves. Forever burned a hole in my sports fandom that we didn’t finish above him in the standings ever. One last middle finger to me on the way out.
