Why do you think he was a Mayock pick? Maybe he was (we don't know) but generally when teams focus on positions of need as much as we do that's a sign of a coach dominated team.  Furthermore, Arnette makes sense in that scenario as Ohio St is one of the few teams that consistently runs NFL style coverages (and specifically our scheme).  Coaches can see Arnette doing exactly what they're going to ask him to do.  Generally, scouting types are more comfortable with projection.

How do you know SF was going to draft Ruggs at 13?  Shannhan said after the draft that Lamb and Aiyuk were their top 2 WRs.

I don't think the threat to Ruggs was SF but Denver trading up to 13. I don't care because i'd rather have Lamb.

Because it was clear TB wanted a OT so there was zero downside in trading back 1 pick?

Kinlaw was great value at 14 and with the depth of this WR class it makes perfect sense to pick him and then use your second 1st on a WR.

I'm not saying that I even believe what Shanahan said post draft but we have no idea whether they were going to pick Ruggs.

Back to Arnette - I'm not saying he wasn't Mayocks top CB available.  The point is that coaches generally want to fill needs, regardless of value, which is exactly what we've done the last 3 years since Gruden got here:

  • 2018 - locked into OT
  • 2019 - locked into DE
  • 2020 - locked into WR + CB

Mayock knows the positions of needs as well and Mayocks job is to fill them, but I'm pretty sure Grudens pick at CB would have not been Arnette. Also remember when the Niners took Mcglincey from us and we traded back for Miller, it's kind of a tell especially knowing WR was high on there list yet passed on Lamb.

I don’t think it’s a tell at all.  Even if Ruggs was there, trading down 1 spot and picking up a free pick made sense because you know TB is taking Wirfs.

the past 3 years, those were glaring and obvious needs. We just so happened to fill all those holes, with quality players and now we are practically set at all starting positions. Now we can focus on depth and secondary needs.

were in a great spot moving forward to go BPA.

I don't think it's been talked about much how Arnette played with a freaking cast. That's brutally hard at CB.

especially press corners, helped not being grabby though, had to really on technique

I see Arnette as a top end Slot CB, with Mullen and Johnson on the outside.

Mayock mentioned the other day, that he was looking to draft guys to eventually replace aging vets that are making a lot of money. I feel that's what they did here to replace Joyner. If Johnson can develop, we have a young talented trio of CBs moving forward.

I mean you really believe an nfl coached texted him after the 1st rd and said yeah that corner raiders drafted we had him in our top.10. Cmon. A friend of the program at that. I dont know if it's for clout but he definitely lying.

I do know a month ago I read a guy who thought Arnette was as good as Okudah I will try to find the article, just saying there are a few people who by his tape thought highly of him

The arm length scares me more than the speed tbh. It’s trademark Nickel CB arm length.

But it’s nice to know his floor is a dominant Nickel CB. No way he fails inside imo.

However, I think he can succeed outside. He’s tough. Like I said before, he’s just gonna need some good Safety’s.

Agree with this, think its a bit of a reach as I had Johnson, Terrell and Fulton as preferred options but like Arnette. Minimum he should be a very good slot Corner though if that's all he is it'll be pretty terrible value. Hope we view him and he can succeed outside!

Trading down did makes sense, and if Ruggs was there they would have nabbed him, seeing that WR was there highest priority and they passed on Lamb who Shanahan claims to have loved. For a DT lots of teams have dropped.
