TE Cole Kmet

Notre Dame

Height: 6'6" Weight: 262lb

2019 stats: Rec: 43 | Yards: 515 | TD: 6

What the Draft analysts say (via NFL.com):

Quote
Overview
Long bodied, early entry Y tight end prospect who is a better pass threat than run blocker at this stage. Kmet should continue to fill out his frame, but his run blocking is too scattered and needs better focus and efficiency as a pro. He can be jammed and slowed by early contact into his route, but once he's striding, he becomes a legitimate second-level threat with sneaky separation speed and intriguing ball skills. He's still developing and could be a slow starter headed into the league, but he has the talent to eventually become a solid starter as a pass-catching in-line tight end with the ability to mismatch from the slot with his size.
Strengths
  • Good size with long arms and more mass likely to be added
  • Will come across formation and land a blow on wham blocks
  • Adequate hand placement and runs feet through the block
  • Nice job of staying connected to base blocks with lateral slides
  • Gets defenders off of him downfield for catch space
  • Calm in the air to adjust and bring it in
  • Can go get the ball wherever it is thrown
  • Heavy inside his pads with ability to absorb contact
  • Rumbles after catch, treating tacklers like bumper cars
Weaknesses
  • Body control and strength as a blocker need work
  • Below-average instincts and angles as move blocker
  • Inefficient and slow getting into block fits
  • Needs to play with earlier inside hands and rolled hips at point of attack
  • Too tall coming off the ball and into his routes
  • Has issues playing through contact within the first five yards
  • Upright into brakes, allowing defenders to read and jump routes
  • Questionable hand strength to secure contested catches

What the scouts say (via Bob McGinn's article on The Athletic):

Quote

Kmet reminded one scout of ex-Cowboy Jason Witten (6-5 ½, 260, 4.67). “If you want an all-around guy, kind of a Kyle Rudolph-type guy, he’s it,” said another scout. “He’s faster than Kyle, but he doesn’t have the ball skills. He’s had some durability issues. He’s got great intangibles. He can run. He can catch. He doesn’t have an elite trait but you really love the body type and everything about him.” Third-year junior with 60 catches (43 in 2019) for 691 (11.5) and six TDs. “He’s not a talent like Vernon Davis or Evan Engram,” a third scout said. “He’s more of a throwback, classic Y tight end. He’s solid. He won’t fail.” From Lake Barrington, Ill. “I don’t see a great blocker and I don’t see a great receiver,” said a fourth scout. “I see a guy that’s more of a U. I don’t see a great Y. He reminds me a lot of the (Drew) Sample guy that came out last year out of Washington and plays with the Bengals. Some of the workout (numbers) were better than the player he is. I don’t see first round. I think he’s always going to be a solid No. 2 (tight end), maybe a good No. 3.” Wonderlic of 28.

Pace ******* overvalues character. It's starting to piss me off.

Look at Trubisky... just because you're a "good dude" and a "hard worker" doesn't mean you're a good football player.

I hope he proves me wrong, but he looked stiff AF on tape to me.

Certainly not the pick I wanted especially with all the talent still on the board...looking at the positives he is by far the best TE in this draft overall...has size, speed and is physical enough to line up as a true TE but has the receiving skills to line up in the flex...he will make Jimmy Graham better because we will ask him to do less in line...other than that I have 6 guys easily ahead of him as better picks.

In 2017 he knew he had a QB issue so he overdid it with Glennon the Trubisky.

In 2018 he knew he had a WR issue so he drafted Miller and signed Robinson.

In 2020 he knew he had a TE issue so he signed Graham and drafted Kmet.

Start doing better, Ryan

On my way to work this morning I was listening to the Score and Mully and Haugh were talking about how they doubt the Bears draft Kmet because we signed Graham.  I should've known then that this was happening...

This just shows how huge TE is to our offense. I wanted OL/CB/WR tonight, but if this guy is THE guy that makes the TE position click then it'll be worth it.

What's awesome is he's a local kid who grew up a Bears fan.

Don’t forget 2019 - Signed Mike Davis and drafted David Montgomery
