Pettine's Gone, but Outpost is Back

I gotta say, watching the All-22 through the first two drives, this wasn't what I was expecting to see.  Pettine really did come to play in this one.  A nicely disguised Cover-3 from our normal C2 look, six man blitz with Clark and Z stunting (that resulted in a TD, but you know), Savage playing man in the slot.  Also I didn't realize how much PI the Bucs receivers were committing on the regular.  Good lord.  Godwin and Evans clearly came in with a specific gameplan; just throw them out of the way if they try to press.  Calling that hold on King at the end of the game is even worse seeing how little the refs cared about physical play up to that point.

I agree MrBG. The refs let the Bucs receivers play extremely physical and let their offensive line hold throughout the game. Bucs defenders were grabbing and holding so much that it was shocking to see that late flag on King.

None of this is said to make excuses. This was a championship game, players need to adjust to how the game is being played, and not let themselves being in a position where a call can have such a major impact upon the outcome.

But it is damned frustrating to see the Bucs grab receivers and use them as leverage to get into position all game long. There was clear and egregious holding on the same play on Gary, that ref swallowed his whistle, but a ref from 35 yards down the field throws a late flag with the game on the line to call pass interference - not the correct call holding, which he and others had been ignoring for 58 minutes plus.

That should honestly be the shortest meeting ever...with Mennenga.  Just hand him a box and shake your head side to side.  Have security right outside the door to escort him to and then from his office and out of the building.

Fire him but offer him a werthers original on the way out so he can have a quiet ride home. It's the nice thing to do.

Unless he pulls a Creed and convinces MLF to fire Hackett instead.

Why would you risk handing him anything and him fumbling it all over your office? Or risk him not being able to find the same office door he walked through earlier? You have one of the security guys in there with you to carry his stuff and direct him safely.

Whomever they fire (if they do...) I hope they do it professionally, with respect and dignity because it reflects on the organization just as much as it does on the departing party and how it's handled will get around if its done badly.
