Big Second Year

What second year players on your team are not well known, but could be Pro-Bowl in January? Let's leave out the 2020 first round picks.

Here are two from the Chiefs

Lucas Niang OT - Niang redshirted 2020 by opting out. While considered by some to be a potential 1st round pick, he was medically downgraded, hence the opt out. Now fully healthy, he spent the last year training with a specialist. In mini camp he looked fit and agile.

L'Jarius Sneed CB - Sneed has the size to play S and rare speed even at CB, though he player safety at Louisiana Tech. From a minor school and a position change, so it's no wonder he slid to #138. Forced to start immediately, because of a suspension to Bashad Breeland, he led the league in interceptions when he broke bone in game #2, and missed nine games. In spite of that, he was a force down the stretch, playing mostly the slot receiver. Sneed allowed a passer rating of just 66.6 when targeted, including the playoffs and Super Bowl. He also blitzes with authority, garnering sacks in playoff wins against the Browns and the Bills.

For the Bucs, 6th round pick Khalil Davis

Super athletic IDL who played very little last year, but rookies rarely do get much time under our staff. Coaches and players praised him in practice though, and after the FO ignored adding depth to the DL this year that might mean it’s a bit more than coachspeak.

Antonio Gibson is a year more comfortable at RB. I don't think he makes THAT jump, but hey, it's possible.

Kamren Curl started a lot of the season at safety. I think he rotates a lot, but injuries and his growth? I guess it's possible.

I don't see AGG or Charles doing it and they might be the only other ones.

Ezra Cleveland getting a full season under his belt and playing LG instead of RG should help. I doubt he has a ProBowl type season. I'm just hoping for average play.

I think if Cam Dantzler can stay healthy he'll surprise a lot of people. I love his skillset.

Agreed on Gibson.  He's probably too well known for this thread though, depending on how many fantasy football players are in here.  If he stays healthy, I think he'll have a big year.

Curl finished the year as PFF's highest-graded safety from the 2020 rookie class.  Wish we could get rid of Collins and let Curl permanently hold down the SS position.  He'll rotate in, but I don't think he'll get enough snaps to make the Pro-Bowl, no matter how well he plays in those limited snaps.

I could see a bit of a disappointing season for Chase Claypool. Not because he's bad, just his rookie year put fan expectations sky high. I think Alex Highsmith and Anthony McFarland might take massive steps forward this year. Also, our newly starting LG, Kevin Dotson, should look pretty good getting full time reps one can assume. All are 2nd year guys.

Darrell Taylor is an obvious answer after missing all of 2020; so him contributing anything will be a huge improvement. But its his prospective move to SAM that has alot of people intrigued. In Seattles BEAR front (which they ran more of down the stretch last year to much more success), DT would essentially be operating as a 3-4 OLB. Something he did alot at Tennessee.

For the 49ers I think you could see both of our first round picks make a big jump. Aiyuk was awesome last year but missed 4 games I think and had to play most of the season with Nick Mullens under center. Aiyuk still put up over 700 yards receiving and I fully expect him to be our number one wideout this season and break 1k yards. Kinlaw was pretty raw coming in, but flashed last year on a line without Bosa and Armstead not playing in his best spot all year. I think with our players returning on the line and Kinlaw's growth into the pro game, he'll also be able to produce more this year. I expect all the rest of our 2020 draft picks to be in reserve roles.
