How are the rookies doing?

Any Lions fans? I'm interested to hear how Sewell has looked.

I watched the first game against the niners, and he was far better than I thought he was going to be (especially given the talk of how he did in preseason and the like). But he did a really, really nice job of handling Bosa for the most part, and Bosa is feasting so far this year. So that's a pretty good compliment. Now, he could have dropped off after that, but that first game he was pretty good.

The Dolphins have draft picks, not rookies. That always needs to be understood. It's like annually going to a car dealer, haggling and spending, then driving home in the same vehicle every time.

Luckily the Dolphins with all those draft picks have been pretty bad at drafting.

  • Zach Wilson - any opinions are subjective to this point, we'll see
  • AVT - getting better each week, would bet on him being a fixture for years to come
  • Elijah Moore - see Wilson, struggling to stay healthy. Was unequivocally the most hyped player throughout training camp, so excitement is there
  • Michael Carter - looks really good in a limited role, whether or not he'll be an every down back is TBD
  • Jamien Sherwood - honestly haven't paid much attention, he's playing which is good but more so out of necessity
  • Michael Carter II - looks like a steal, been great to this point
  • Jason Pinnock - hasn't played
  • Hamsah Nasirildeen - relegated to special teams after opening the season as a starter. Now on the IR
  • Brandin Echols - has more than held his own as a starter, another possible late round find at CB
  • Jonathan Marshall - N/A

Too early to anoint anyone but it has the makings of a foundational draft. The Jets need to be competitive though, otherwise it's difficult gauge production without contextualizing that any level of competence is inflated on a dismal team.

ReShawn Slater is on his way to becoming one of the best LT in the NFL. So I'd say he's having a fantastic rookie season

Assante Samuel is having one of the better rookie seasons for a CB. Only rookie CB to pick off Mahomes

Josh Palmer looked promising in TC and PS but is buried in the depth chart due to Mike Will having a career year and Guyton eating up the other snaps.

Tre McKitty is buried in the depth but really hasn't showed anything and I don't think he will as he was super raw coming out of Georgia.

Chris Rumph isn't getting many playtime and that's due to just how well Tillery and Nwosu have been playing.

Brenden Jaimes is a rotational guard that could see starting time next season.

Nick Niemann has been just okay considering where he was drafted. Should see more playtime now with Murray out but is strictly a depth player at this point.

Mark Webb hasn't been activated for any games but looked about as good as any 7th rounder can be in pre-season.

Niemann is primarily a ST specialist at this point. So I guess so far so good. McKitty has the same problems that Palmer has, only worse since Palmer is at least active on gameday. Both Parham and Anderson stepped up their game this season. Don’t forget Rountree, who’s not a bad change of back to Ekeler given that he’s a 6th rounder.

Edit: I feel like Webb has been active for some games.

Darrisaw hasn’t played yet. Been injured since camp.

Wyatt Davis is a reserve guard, got beat out by converted Tackle Udoh at RG. Has gotten camp reps at Center so he might have a future somewhere along the IOL. LG Cleveland hasn’t been very good this year so maybe he takes over at some point.

Kellen Mond has been a train wreck. Might be lucky to be a backup come next year. Long ways to go to show he’s even NFL worthy. Only on the team due to draft status.

Chaz Surratt flashed in the preseason and could be a nice special teams player. Not sure if he will be anything more than that.

Ihmir Smith-Marette is the kick returner and hasn’t done anything notable.

The rest have either been injured, buried on the depth chart or off the team.

I wouldn’t say this is a disappointing class yet, but not having any day one contributors has hurt.  There’s some pieces that might be much better in the future like Darrisaw, Davis, Patrick Jones and Jenarius Robinson but it’s too soon to judge.

Dang, I was high on both Darrisaw and Davis. That sucks to hear.

Sewell struggled at RT during the preseason. He’s definitely an LT only. Which if you’re going to be pigeonholed into one position, it’s not a bad one to be stuck in.

Was good the first two weeks. Unfortunately, he had a bad game against Chicago and an uneven game against Baltimore.

Eric Stokes: Started as the #1 CB with Jaire out and played admirably. His speed allows him to break up passes after he is beat. Already better then any other corner not named JA and has a bright future as long as he can keep himself from being a little too handsy. B

Josh Myers: Starting center week 1 and has been amazing all things considered. Looks to be another hit for the Packers O-Line. Would be an A but a couple miscues setting the line coverage has caused some sacks and TO from Rodgers. B+

Amari Rogers: Starting punt returner but so far nothing bad or good out of the return team. Useless in the offense and has mostly been used as the decoy on end arounds. Currently behind Randall Cobb who has been extremely solid in the slot (Not sure if that says more about Cobb or Rogers).

Royce Newman: Newman surprisingly beat out Lucas Patrick and Runyan for the RG position. He looks like another mid round Packers steal of an OL. A (Due to where he was drafted and what he has done so far).

TJ Slaton: Little flashes so far at the NT position. Shown ability to be stout against the run and a little bit of pass rush as well. Most likely will not see much playing time outside of injuries to Kenny Clark who is by far the best defender left on the defense with both JA & Smith out. C

Cole Van Lanen: Currently on the practice squad. Didn't show much in preseason nor has beaten out any of the back ups with the injuries. I won't give him an F since he is still in the NFL but I don't see him sticking around long term without improvement. D-

Isiaah McDuffie: See Cole Van Lanen above except core special teams player on the active roster. D

Kylin Hill: Starting kick off returner and probably the best one the Packers have had in a few years. Has shown the talent to be an NFL RB and IMO could possibly be a starter or a poor mans Aaron Jones in a RB needy offense. If Aaron Jones ever goes down with an injury (knock on wood) would feel fairly comfortable with Kylin taking some of those snaps. For a late Rd 7 pick I think that's plenty of value. B

Toney is electric. A single Giants offensive player hasn't taken over a game like that since 2018. Granted, he had to because literally everyone else was hurt, but it was still fun to watch. He only played 54% of the team's offensive snaps and had almost 200 receiving yards. He put Diggs in a blender, and he doesn't even know how to run routes yet. He could be really good.

Put Diggs in a blender?  I don’t remember Diggs covering him much if at all.  That was Anthony Brown and Jourdan Lewis.
Toney is good but he’s already showing that you can get in his head.  Some DBs are going to start using that emotion against him.
