first ballot, without question

This is such a huge loss for the cards. He was on an absolute tear. Blew up a ton of run plays. Looked like peak SWatts. Was one of the reasons their defense was exceeding expectations this year.

I know basic stats don't tell the whole story, but the guy had 16 tackles and 1 sack almost half way through the season. He wasn't playing close to peak anything that he used to be. The Cardinals defense will be fine.

based on his peak - say 5 years? Sure.

Based on his whole career? A no for me.

The peak is enough to cover the whole career perspective, though.  When you peak that high, you don't need to compile.

That "say 5 years" includes 5 1st team All-Pros (including a 2nd team nom at a different position), and record tying 3 AP Defensive Player of the Year awards.  He's the only player in NFL history with 2 20 sack seasons, and only the second to have 4 years of at least 16 (Reggie White).  First defensive lineman, since WWII, to score 5 TDs.  One of only a few defensive lineman to receive MVP votes.  He was an elite pass rusher, while also being incredible against the run, and an other worldly ability to rack up PD's, as a defensive lineman.

He's a straight lock for the Hall of Fame.  He has no need  to compile career sack numbers to bolster his case.  He's already a no brainer, and a probable 1st ballot guy, without it.

He is also one of the faces of the NFL and probably the face of all defensive players since Lewis retired. In large part, obviously, for his off the field contributions.
