Stafford traded to the Rams for Goff, multiple FRPs

Snead and McVay have a lot of friends in the media. Earlier today Peter Schrager seemed to be preparing the world for this:

Like, I'm sorry but this is not how I would want my team to be run. Also, how forward thinking is giving massive barely-tradeable contracts to players and then trading them or cutting them a few years later. Seems like the definition of short-sightedness to me.

Long term stability means nothing if you don't get a ring at some point. The Rams are competing while everyone else is praying on draft picks and they think this gets them closer to a ring. How many teams like the Packers or Saints would have loved it if their front office went yolo at some point in the last decade and set Brees and Rodgers up on a stacked team for 2 years and giving them clear SB windows that they had strong odds on even if it meant they'd suck for 3-4 years after? Picks are potential. Only like a third of the first round every year becomes a Pro Bowler and less than that hit that elite All Pro level.

Also, Peter Schrager mentioned that McVay fell in love with Stafford and wanted him.

I get the feeling that there’s still alittle HS nerd to McVay, and the minute he heard that a QB ‘wanted him’ he got tunnel vision and all sensible thought went out the window from there on out

I'm on record as believing the Football Team has a higher-likelihood of landing Watson than the Niners do (and that's even if he's traded, I can see the Texans digging in their heels, for better or worse).

Interested in hearing why you believe that? But a lot of this is going to depend on where Watson wants to play. If the Texans are fine trading him inside the conference, then no team is going to be able to compete with the Jets or Dolphins.

It wouldn't have been 5 years, but now it'll be at least 2 years more than it would have been. "What's the alternative' is what people say to justify PayDay loans - there's always an alternative to spending multiple 1st round picks on an upgrade.

I mean if you don't like giving up the picks that's fine. That's totally reasonable. It just seemed weird to say you didn't love it because he wasn't better than Russell Wilson. Not many quarterbacks are.

I don't like the trade because we just mortgaged our future to go from a mediocre young QB to a bit better than mediocre old QB.

I really don't think two low 1st round picks is a big deal. You spent 1 extra first rounder for a bird in hand. And I get the age is a factor and no rookie salary, but still, I don't think it's an apocalyptic amount of draft capital. And he's really not that old. QBs are highlight productive in their 30s. Leaving Brady out of it, physically Rodgers is still basically in his prime and he's got several years on Stafford. Peyton had some great seasons between 33 and 37, and his head even almost fell clean off in the middle of it all. Brees only really tailed off the past couple of years. Rivers too.

This isn't you guys doing the 25 million, year-to-year old QB thing like NO, Indy, and TB have done in recent years. Probably won't be a decade, but you should have a few good years here.

I think Stafford will play well in McVay's system. But he's still Stafford. If you're going to make a Super Bowl or bust trade, you don't do it with an average QB. I clearly hold more hope for Goff's future than the Rams do. Maybe I'm naïve and blind. I guess we'll find out.

That's my problem with this trade. If we're going all in, find a way to get Deshaun Watson.

And I don't doubt we tried.  I don't think the Texans feel near as leveraged to have to trade Watson as the Lions do with Stafford (mostly because the decision in the case of the later was reached mutually).  Also, as I stated in our forum, us trading for Watson (and you knew this because you outlined it in your mock) was contingent on trading Goff.  If the Texans had no interest in Goff on the contract he's on, I doubt they're going to sit around waiting for us to unload Goff in an even more unlikely 2nd trade to another team, quite possibly/likely using up assets they would also want coming to them as part of a trade for Watson.

Stafford isn't any of the QBs you named.

He sure hasn't shown it in the playoffs.

No, but all 3 games have been on the road, 2 of them being in well-known tough places to play, against legit better teams. Not an excuse, Stafford on the whole hasn't performed all that well, but he wasn't on great teams and it's not like everything else was going great and he personally just boned it up.

Cool rankings from a no name on a forum. Nice

Are you seriously insinuating Goff is anywhere close to Matt Stafford? Good luck with anyone agreeing with you on that, no name on a forum or likewise.

Maybe he would prefer the opinions of Sean McVay, Sneed and whomever runs the Lions that all agree that Stafford is better than Goff by the measure of 2 first round picks.

They arent "no name on a forum"
