For one thing you can't play both QBs at once

So did the Packers not find their QB of the Future in 2005?

Besides, the Steelers have the 24th pick in the draft.  The odds of them getting a QB who is ready to start in Week 1 was slim to none anyway.  And if Ben was that bad and they had a 1st round QB on the bench, he can always be benched.

This move gave them more cap space and guarantees they will at least have a competent starter.  They can still go draft a QB if they want.

I'll say I'm really surprised Ben agreed to restructure AND take a 5M pay cut.    He clearly wasn't even good enough to retain at 19M....but the Steelers didn't have great options either, given the cap situation, and Ben's never acted out of interest for others before.    But then again, probably very clear to him returning to the Steelers O was his only chance to keep playing.

We're going to see a lot more of this IMO (other than just outright cuts too) - in terms of restructuring to push the cap hit down the road.   The gap between the 2021 projected cap and the 2022 cap once the rest of the TV deal money comes in, should be massive.   Teams are going to get cap compliant with their most expensive salaried players they don't want to cut with restructures.  It's just a matter of how much & how often for this year.

The corpse of Philip Rivers got $25 million last year to play for the Colts. The complete lack of respect for what Roethlisberger did last year is mind boggling. Anyone with eyes could tell you which QB between the two had more left in the tank and it sure as hell wasn't Rivers.

He came out weeks ago and said he didn't care what he played for this year. He's making relative chump change this year at $14 or 19 million. It wasn't about the money so he took a pay cut.

And the narrative around him will still remain the same. He's selfish or this or that. Nothing he does is going to change how some people view him.

TIL only Steelers fans have eyes to see.  Rivers looked WAYYYYYYYYYYYY better last year to these blind eyes.

I mean, he The Steelers did beat the Ravens twice last year.

Well, one of those wins involved a second half comeback down double digits in which he basically drew up the plays for his receivers in the dirt. So yea.
