dust247
Gutey watching his Bulldogs and stumbled across Hopper Edited April 27 by dust247
Zycho32
Thoughts about Hopper; Since we're more likely to stick with an overall 4-2-Nickel look, we probably only need a situational 3rd LB as opposed to an every-down starter. Hopper's apparent strengths work best with run D, meaning he's likely going to be more of a short-down specialist for us, at least right away. Otherwise, he might be a Donovan Bishop for us, working in tandem with either Walker or Cooper and letting them fly around while he crashes the line on the inside. A2j1m
I think they thought Wallace would of been there and he went just a few picks before. Hooper was second choice, had to be

Chili
I very much preferred Cedric Gray's tape over either of our linebackers. I loved his energy, his long arms and the way he tackles. He's 21 years old, showed good coverage skills whilst being a little heavier than our new LBs. On paper shows good playmaking numbers in TFL, Sacks, FF, Int. Hopper is 2 years older and his numbers are worse than Gray in many categories both in his measurables and his playing statistics. Gute nearly always choose the younger and more athletic guy. I wonder what it was about Hopper they really liked? I understand that the knock on Gray is that he misses too many tackles or over pursuits but at his age these are easily correctable with coaching. That shouldn't have been enough to turn off from him. Edited April 28 by Chili

He went earlier than expected
thrILL!
If Nixon is excited by the new kickoff return rules, other returners will be as well. We’re going to need special teams demons to put them on the ground so let Hopper, Williams and Oladapo eat. And provide depth at their positions.
Malfatron
Whatever If all our draft picks are a future vision, we have a bad team

JBURGE
Ironically if he is a really good special steamer and decent depth for 4 years I'm kind of cool with it. With how Gute's 3rd rounders have gone, I'm cool with him going for a single and getting on base. Edited April 28 by JBURGE
craig
Time will tell, but I'm on the IGWT train. These are smart, thoughtful guys who put a lot of work into their board. When there is an unexpected decision, I want to try to understand their thinking. They might mis-scout and mis-judge. But their is logic within their decision-making. Gute's comments were helpful. He made reference to Hopper as a guy who "stops guys". Seems to me that MLF does not let guys practice tackling, so adding a guy who already is a good tackler and stops guys seems very appealing. Gute represented Hopper as being fast. Speed obviously seemed to be a priority at ILB. Gute represented Hopper as being physical. Talked about him as being a leader and being a serious guy. So given the scouting perceptions that Gute and his scouts had, I don't see why their valuation of him was inherently illogical. Time will tell, of course, if they scouted badly and maybe he's none of those things they think he is. But yeah, I'm hoping that what they thought they saw is real, and that he'll be a good player for us.

oldmansmell
On 4/26/2024 at 8:59 PM, MuFF said: LB, S, RB, LB with top 90 picks. Not the way to build a team. You can find these positions in day 3 or FA. I disagree pretty vehemently about this. I really don't think you can find an elite edge, tackle, QB, or CB in this range without significant risk. There are outliers for sure, Maxx Crosby, Bahk, Wilson, or Snead, but it's actually a really clever use of 2-4th round draft capital. It is reminiscent of the period where 3-4 teams were getting elite OLBs outside of round one because their skill-sets were undervalued. Green Bay, up to now at least, seems dead-set on using their first round on the guys you are thinking of, but an elite S or ILB in the second is better than the mediocre DL guys the Cowboys or Falcons drafted. Then you just add three OL that have played a lot, been a pretty consistent trend, and it seems like maybe because of Steno or whatever, it'll shake out ok.
