Why can’t a defensive player win MVP?

Donald is the best player in football overall but not the most impactful player that's why he will never win MVP.

Nor is he the most impactful player on his own team.... Replace Goff with a scrub and they're a middling 8-8 squad at best. Replace Donald with a scrub and even if the entire defense goes to hell they'd still win probably 11ish games off the prolific offense alone.

For any non-QB to win MVP, you need none of the league's QBs to have great years plus have a historically good year yourself. Not gonna happen this year, as we already see several QBs having great years.

I disagree. Donald is that defense. They struggle stopping people without Donald. If you don’t have Goff you still have a juggernaut offense and still have Gurley. If you don’t have Gurley, you still have a juggernaut offense and still have Goff.

This is practically the giants right now and look how good their offense is. mcvay can only do so much without a quality qb like goff. Also they struggle to stop people *with* donald.

agreed. McVay deserves a lot of credit for helping Goff turn it around but I think people are undervaluing the importance of a stud QB when they say the Rams can plug in just another QB in there and don't miss a beat. Goff was the #1 pick for a reason and those type of talents don't grow on trees.

Well the Giants also almost entirely lack an o-line. Rams have been creating some monster holes.

I wish they would have never named it Most Valuable Player. People take the word Valuable way too literally when trying to figure this thing out.

Yeah the best definition for what MVP actually is:

the best QB on the best team. Take the top 4 records and if there is an outstanding QB amongst them, they win. If no QB is outstanding and an RB is about to break a record, and are on a playoff team.... they win. If none of those circumstances exist and you are the GOAT defensive player, you can maybe have it.

How else are we supposed to define it?

Definition: the player who contributes the most to his or her team's success.

Using the Rams as an example - that would be Goff, not Donald.

Player of the Year would be a better award, because no matter how you dice it QBs are more valuable to a team than any other position.

Defensive player can't win the MVP because Mahomes will throw for 50 TDs.

That kind of value can't be replicated on the defensive side of the ball with just one player.  It would take a GOAT like season and a down year from RBs and QBs.  It doesn't look like there will be anymore QB down years any time soon.

I kind of agree - it would take a down year from a lot of QBs to get into the discussion, along with a year without any RBs putting up big numbers.

You'd be more likely to see a WR win MVP than a defensive player, IMO.
