Assuming his play doesn’t drastically deteriorate, that’s going to look real good in 5ish years. Looks like a good deal for both sides.

Honestly, its going to look good for most of the deal. His next two years are still cheap. $45M may already seem good by the time the extension actually kicks in. Let alone in 7 to 12 years.

What does $140 million injury guarantee mean?

Very basic explanation, but

If he suffers an injury in play, he's getting that money. It's locked in. Say he gets hurt in 2022; alex smith level injury. His base salary in 2023 is 45 million (for example) and guaranteed for injury, and a 2024 salary of 40 million is also guaranteed for injury.  If he can't pass a physical to play he's getting that money, even if he's never playing again. He will count against their cap at those amounts and everything.

That's why Alex Smith has still been on Washington's roster. His salary last year and this year is guaranteed for injury, and he's been unable to play because an injury suffered playing. It's why even if he can never play again, he would simply not retire.
