I suspect they can. You really think teams are lining up to sign a UDFA who was kicked out of 2 college football programs?

Do you think teams really give a **** about that once somebody else takes a flyer on a guy? The NFL is littered with guys who have done way worse than Cox ever has. Like NFL teams and the NFL in general have some strict moral code. They suspend guys for gambling on sports yet line their pockets with ad money from Ceasars Sports book and others. I'm sick of people pretending that NFL organizations take the moral high ground.

This dude can rush the passer, you don't play games allowing somebody to pick him up. You just don't.

I don't mean for this to come off as me being a ****.

Has he fallen off in your opinion that you put him here?  I assumed he’s the clear cut 2nd spot for us at safety after Savage.  I know he’s bounced around the league a bit but Ford had multiple big play INTs last season for us.  Maybe he has found his niche with us similar to Sul.

I am still of the mind that Ford is probably the starter opposite Savage.  That is why he was number 1.  In actuality, he is probably pretty close to that first group.  My reasoning for not putting the safeties in that group is that I can still see any of them making it, and any of them besides Savage getting cut with a really strong or horrible showing next week.

Did you watch him last night? I came away pretty impressed.  I don't think this is a guy that you let get away, if he has his head on straight.  And as of right now, there is no reason to think that he doesn't.

Which end of the roster guy has the potential, both in the future and this season, that Brenton Cox has?

Numbers game though. Hard to carry Cox unless you let Hollins go, which would be the long-term play I guess. Cox isn't seeing the field this season so you could carry him just to redshirt him, but again, I don't see 6 EDGE guys making it. They'd have to go light on the DL or ILB to compensate and I don't see them cutting Ford who is DL 6 nor do I see them cutting both Wilson and Tariq (one will be ILB 4).

If Gary is healthy, Cox is the #5 Edge. Not sure how much he would play on defense. Special teams is often the deciding factor on the final cuts. Has he been a key player there? I'm not sure.

Don't get me wrong. I'm not saying he shouldn't be on the 53. I just think  if Gute feels he needs to load up at other positions there's a good chance you could waive him and get him on the PS. A lot of teams don't make waiver claims on cutdown day, and when they do, it's not usually for  UDFA rookies. Look at the Packers. If they make waiver claims, it will likely be for a vet TE with ST experience, not some rookie.

I made it work like this:

QB 2, RB 4, WR 6, TE 3, OL 9, DL 6, Edge 6, ILB 4, CB 6, S 4, specialist 3 = 24 Offense, 26 Defense, 3 specialists.

I don't know who you want to keep over Cox.  Tell Rich that he gets Wilson or Carpenter and not both.

Four safeties might be tough when one is a guy who can't play defense (Leavitt). That's really light even though that room sucks overall. Also think they'll keep 10 OL but only probably 3 RBs so that's fine.

Still think Cox's future comes down to Hollins and the short/long term decision. Hollins is better for this year but probably won't be back in 2024.

What position would he want to load up on where he would expose a guy who could turn into a 10 sack a year guy? WR? We always think our WRs we waive are getting claimed and they don't. RB? No way you keep a 4th RB over a developing pass rusher. Safety? They are all pretty marginal, so you are going to keep a 6th safety?

I don't see the justification for keeping more of another position vs. 6 at EDGE. I'd let Hollins go before I let Cox go.

Hollins was a waiver claim for GB last season and a FA re-signing this past offseason for $1.28M.  Not sure there is a strong market for him around the league to be claimed if he is cut.   Cox is a more of an unknown and teams might look at him as a higher upside player being a rookie/UDFA

Ah, the great 53 debates are underway. I agree with the wisdom that you want to keep premium positions ahead of others, all things being equal. If you think a guy could become even a decent pass rusher in a rotation, you keep him around and Gary might take some time to return.  I like what I’ve seen from the guy but nothing to justify the Cox fetish I’ve seen here. He might be good one day and he can move, he might not make the progress people hope for. We should see most of the 3rd string should get a pretty extended audition for the final game.

It seems like you could easily stash a DT like Ford on the PS and have him on call for when you need him. Of course there’s always a risk you lose him and maybe he turns out to be Lawrence Guy who could have just played steady interior defense for a decade or so. This would be a terrible time to be a GM, outside of letting talented guys walk you’ve got to keep enough depth at positions to weather the storms and hope some of your developmental guys become what you hoped they could.  Whether or not it’s a rebuild year, we need to get some wins.  I think I’m being optimistic but Love getting a playoff game win or lose would be huge for his development.

Well **** I forgot Leavitt existed. That makes things a little more interesting in the DB room. I could see 5/5 until stokes gets back then slide Owens to PS.

I also don't think Cox is enough athlete to ever be a 10 sack guy against starting tackles. I'd  go 5 guys in the room with Hollins. And see if you can get Cox/Banks to PS. If the Vikings grab Cox, I wouldn't be upset.

My roster prediction will probably look different than most.  I know little about the nuances of football, and I paid little attention to Special Teams contributors (besides who I noticed on the field).  But here's who I got, alphabetically by last name:

QB Sean Clifford, Jordan Love
RB AJ Dillon, Aaron Jones, Emanuel Wilson
WR Romeo Doubs, Malik Heath, Jayden Reed, Samori Toure, Christian Watson, Dontayvion Wicks
TE Josiah Deguara, Tucker Kraft, Luke Musgrave
T Zach Tom, David Bakhtiari, Caleb Jones, Yosh Nijman, Rasheed Walker
G Jon Runyan, Elgton Jenkins, Royce Newman, Sean Rhyan
C Josh Myers
DL Karl Brooks, Kenny Clark, Jonathan Ford, T.J. Slaton, Colby Wooden, Devonte Wyatt
ILB De'Vondre Campbell, Tariq Carpenter, Isaiah McDuffie, Quay Walker
OLB Kingsley Enagbare, Rashan Gary, Justin Hollins, Preston Smith, Lukas Van Ness
CB Jaire Alexander, Corey Ballentine, Rasul Douglas, Keisean Nixon, Carrington Valentine
S Rudy Ford, Innis Gaines, Anthony Johnson Jr., Dallin Leavitt, Jonathan Owens, Darnell Savage
ST Anders Carlson, Matt Orzech, Pat O'Donnell
