What movie are you watching?

Rewatched all the Star Wars movies but solo, which I’ll watch at some point too.

Phantom menace: honestly, cut out jar jar and his entire planet and all the over the top politics and it’s a better movie, but everything in it as it was made it a difficult watch. 5/10

attack of the clones: a definite step up and ewan just absolutely kills it. Definitely some corny action though but it was an early 2000s movie. 6/10

revenge of the sith: still my favorite Star Wars movie, I think ewan and Hayden both did a good job despite at times lackluster dialogue writing (from my point of view, the Jedi are evil/only a sith deals in absolutes). Their fight scene at the end was incredible. Anakin’s internal conflict that leads to the dark side and even shows his regret after the fact was well done. And obi wan’s experience with taking advantage of high ground from prior films is showcased as he takes out Anakin, who is trying to use the move he’s likely seen obi wan use several times. 8/10

a new hope: it’s absolutely brilliant for the first in a made up series that kinda did its own thing. The original trilogy might’ve flowed a little better if they’d been able to flesh out all their ideas for the trilogy beforehand rather than retconning everything as they come up with it but obviously those ideas weren’t instant/they didn’t know it was going to blow up like it did. 6/10

empire strikes back: better than the prior, don’t really have any complaints because Luke was only a whiny kid because he grew up a boring moisture farmer on a boring farming planet. Movie also has probably the most iconic line in any movie ever. 7/10

Return of the Jedi: the culmination of the trilogy, where Luke finally grows up, is trained, and doesn’t run in halfcocked. Vader throwing his lightsaber at Luke was unintentionally hilarious, an homage to obi wan besting him with the high ground, so rather than messing around, he just throws his lightsaber at the platform in the biggest **** off move ever. I grew up preferring the prequels considerably more but after this time through the originals are clearly better, outside of tots being my favorite. 8/10

force awakens: I was upset originally when han died, but Harrison ford’s cameo in the final one showed all the original actors leaving was for the better, since A. these movies aren’t about them and B. they are all very old and it shows. They all had a “ridden hard and put away wet” feel. Rey was a pleasant addition, Finn was a little too boisterous, Kylo killed it. I’m still a little upset that people hated kylo, and thought he was lame for losing st the end, despite getting hit with a bow caster that blew other people to smithereens. 7/10

The last Jedi: honestly maybe my least favorite movie of the entire series. Phantom menace’s biggest downfall was being annoying and overly and unnecessarily political. Tlj made some poor choices that forced the rest of the trilogy to spiral into a place it shouldn’t have had to go. Offing snoke with no backstory or anything was stupid. The slow motion chase through space was lame, as was the casino bs and the “anyone can be special, even slave children on a casino planet” story. Really, the only redemption for it might be Kylo going off and being cool. The actual execution of snoke and fight after was fun. The Luke and Kylo projection fight at the end was idiotic. The Finn and Chinese girl love plot was so stupid, but was done to cement Rey/Ben probably. Luke probably couldn’t have been construed in a worse light, but I suppose being a recluse on a planet no one knows would make him the petulant non-participant he was. They kinda just threw him in, made him a whiny self driven loser and then killed him. 4/10

Rise of Skywalker: it wasn’t bad, considering the plot it was given to deal with. I hate that palpatine was alive and defeats the whole arc of the original trilogy. I also disagree with people that said the focus on Death Stars in this trilogy is stupid and stealing original ideas from the originals, but honestly there’s no reason to abandon that technology if it’s there if you’re the bad guys. What doesn’t make sense though is the dramatic evolving of the technology while palpatine was a recluse on exegal, to the point where you can randomly throw it on star destroyers lol. I kind of liked the force dyad idea, but killing Kylo off killed the whole trilogy for me, despite him being granted the best redemption arc and letting him be Vader like he wanted. If they could’ve somehow given the movie/the trilogy a unique big bad guy instead of reusing palpatine again, i might’ve been okay with a 8/10, but I’ll have to give it a. 7/10

Rogue One: I didn’t like it at release but I think it’s cause I’ve always been interested mostly in lightsabers in the Star Wars universe. But this movie was really well done all around and I enjoyed the entire mission to get the plans to destroy the Death Star which cost them their lives. It most importantly fixed a plot hole in the originals about such a gaping design flaw in the Death Star existing lol. The Darth Vader scene at the end was badass, even moreso cause he clearly held back and made it seem like he was thwarted when I think every time he failed in the entire series, he did it intentionally because he didn’t want the dark to win out. 8/10

Biggest joke of entire series: Boba Fett. Viewed as a hero by the masses but he flew up to Luke and instantly got his blaster cut in half by a lightsaber (boba had so many weapons at his disposal but flew up to a Jedi who could really only fight you with his lightsaber at that point lol) then gets bumped into by a blind Han Solo, sets off his jet pack, flies (while screaming like a ****ing idiot) into a wall, the rolls slowly and awkwardly into the sarlacc pit lol. Now, I’m all for the mandolorian and everything about it but boba was a ****ing loser

Watched Sonic The Hedgehog last night. I have to say, very fun. I was expecting a kids movie, which is was, but Jim Carrey was very good in it, really everyone was, and it did the humor well for it, not trying to do hidden adult situation humor in it, mainly just word play and stuff like that. I'd gladly take a second one of these movies.

It was definitely one of those "better than it had any right being" kind of movies.  It was definitely enjoyable.

Finally got around to watching The Highwaymen, and I have to say that this was an excellent movie.  It's a good slow burn until the action speeds up all at once, which is really how real life tends to go.  Excellent character, I guess revelation would be a better word than development, but it really lets you get inside these guys heads and see what makes them tick.  It relied heavily on exposition for that, but I think that was the right call over flashbacks or making this movie cover 40 years.  It keeps everything contained and the storyline taut.  Costner and Harrellson were excellent, and the supporting cast was solid as you could hope.  You really feel the 1930's dust bowl depression era feel of the characters and landscapes as well.  I think it must be in every Kevin Costner contract that he has to be filmed at epic landscape shots at some point in every project.

Watched the original Fright Night on Prime Video, it was a solid, campy good fun vampire flick. Solid story with better emphasis on characters than the 2011 film, and Chris Sarandon plays a MUCH better Jerry than Colin Farrell, though I'll give the remake credit for largely standing on its own and not rehashing too much from the original. I watched the remake about 10 years prior and, while it kept some of the same story elements from the original, I like that it wasn't an almost shot-for-shot remake like the remake of Carrie.

Finally got around to watching The Notebook, and it's a solid movie, but I think it's a bit over rated from all the praise it gets.  I think the "twist" if you can even call it that is too obvious and revealed too early.  Almost would have been better to get it out of the way immediately.  It also kind of rubbed me the wrong way how James Marsden's character gets done dirty and that was in the back of my head during what should have been the emotional climax of the movie.  It's a solid story, but I don't know if it's a movie I ever watch again.  Needed more James Garner in the middle parts.
