What would a WR have to do to win season MVP?

However many receiving yards and TDs he'd have, his QB would have more.

Is it possible for a WR to win season MVP? Maybe by putting up elite (like, best WR in the league elite) production with two or more different QBs in the same year AND if there were no particularly impressive QB candidates from elsewhere in the league?

Yes. If Michael Thomas had his 2019 season in 2017, I think he'd have a real chance at MVP, although it definitely hurts that he's not a human highlight reel the same way Hopkins is.

...but Michael Thomas's 2019 might be the only elite WR season (top 15 all time) where there were multiple QBs and no MVP-caliber QB in the mix. Really would need the stars to align perfectly for a WR to win it.

Post a season like 2007 Randy Moss and hope his QB isn't 2007 Tom Brady

Therein lies the irony. You can't have a 2007 Randy Moss season without your QB just mathematically having a 2007 Brady season, unless he literally doesn't throw it to anyone else on the team at all.

If you take out Moss' stats (yeah yeah I know its stupid) then Brady's season that year is 3313 yards and 27 touchdowns. Replace Moss with say, Hines Ward, then you still "only" have a QB with 4045 yards and 34 touchdowns, which probably doesn't win him MVP (or maybe it would, way too many factors here like whether or not they still go 16-0 or whatever, but it would still be a very tight race between him, Romo, Manning and Favre that year).

Overall point being, if you're a WR who puts up MVP caliber numbers, then almost by definition you will also be playing with a QB who puts up MVP numbers from the more important position.

And that’s just the position most dependent on QB. This year Henry, 2016 Zeke and 2014 Murray all had monster years and as the season went later on the QB got more hype
