Yup, which makes him the probable pick.

Yup my guess is the Niners are the ones leaking all this about Mac stuff to kill any connection with Fields. So they don't tip there hands to the Jets. Imo Fields is rated #2 and Wilson #3 for the Niners. They are fine with getting Wilson but want Fields badly.

This doesn't make any sense though.  Tip there hand to the Jets?  Jets can take whatever QB they want.  If they want Fields, they will take Fields.  If they want Wilson, they will take Wilson.  How's the Niners having or not having a connection to Fields gonna change what QB they take?

I'm not saying the leaks are true or whatever.  Maybe the 49ers are purposely leaking false information/narratives.  But if they are, then IMO I don't get the logic.  I just don't see what they have to gain by it.  Jets clearly aren't trading out of the 2nd pick, so it isn't like a team can leapfrog them.  And LIS, Jets can take whatever QB after Lawrence that they won't, 49ers can't change that.  There is no reason at all to leak false intentions.

EDIT - It'd also make sense if maybe the 49ers were trying to bait a team to trading for the #3 pick, but that obviously isn't the case because the 49ers themselves traded for the pick.

Personally, I don't think they are leaking anything. I think they are just letting people talk. It's the same exact thing as the senior bowl and Stafford.

If Fields played for Bama would you rate him lower because he had a clean pocket and open WRs?

Yes because what makes Fields good wouldn't have been on display. You wouldn't get games like vs Indiana when they had free blitzers all game and they don't lay a finger on him due to his escapability.

Ryan Day basically calling out Orlovsky for saying that Fields doesn’t have the work ethic.

https://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2021/04/05/justin-fields-dan-orlovsky-nfl-draft-fmia-peter-king/

Quote

“The whole idea that he doesn’t have a very good work ethic?” Day said over the phone Saturday afternoon. “I mean, to me, that’s crazy. He got done with the Clemson game [the loss in the college football playoffs in the 2019 season] and he came back and all he did was work to get back to that game. And when those other guys are opting out, what’s he do? He petitions to have a season. He put together this petition that the Big Ten athletes all signed saying that they want to play, but they want to play safely and that they don’t accept canceling the season. It was all led by Justin Fields. Where was everybody else? Where were the guys who were opting out then? You know, you don’t love the game if you’re doing something like that. This kid loves the game.

“I heard something about the last one to come in, first one to leave. First off, the scouts weren’t in our building all year. Last one in? Every morning, at least every morning we could be in the building, early, he’s in with [football sports performance czar] Mickey Marotti. The guys who were self-motivated and could do things on their own, those were the ones who made it. He was unbelievable. He changed his diet, he got stronger. He did better than most.”

Later, Day told me: “I think some people are being a little reckless with their comments.”

Does it? Is he usually right then?

If Schefter isn't one of the most reliable sources for information in the NFL idk who is. Obviously he could be completely wrong, anyone could be wrong, but I like to go with the idea that when there is smoke there is fire.

We won't know the truth until draft day or if the Niners just say who they are picking.

My theory is that the 49ers, at 12, were considering Jones.  And people knew it.  Even people who didn't know it, probably assumed it right?

Then when it seemed like they might have to move up to secure him, they were like, well screw it, if it's gonna cost multiple 1's to get a guy, let's go get one of the top guys.

I could see that being how this story jumps off.  I think Shanahan is thinking, "Yeah, we like Jones--at 12.  We aren't at 12, we're at 3..."

Quoting this because I think its spot on

I said in the niners forum that the niners floated the "mac jones is a shanny qb" when we were in the middle of trade negotiations with the dolphins as a way to retain leverage. "we can stay at 12 and draft a QB we like". We couldnt float the "we love Garoppolo, hes our guy" anymore because we were obviously trying to trade up for a rookie QB.

So the media heard, "49ers love mac jones" then we make the trade up to #3, so they all assume its for Mac Jones.

The Jets offensive coaching staff are all Kyle Shanahan's understudies.

If you heard that your mentor LOVED a certain QB, dont you think that it would slightly influence your decision?

This makes a lot of sense.  I can't believe they would trade all the way up to 3 to get Jones.
