Peter Bukowski -  There will be a lot of talk about the Packers cap situation in 2022, but the burden eases in 2023 both based on contracts and an expected increase in the cap. If they want to great creative for one more year, they can eat some bigger numbers later.

Exactly. The cap gets a big jump and we have little commitments 2023 and beyond. This is all doable

Anticipating the almost certain firing of Maurice Drayton, I decided once again to delve into potential Special Team coordinator candidates.

One name that immediately stands out is Joe Judge who ran the highly ranked Patriots special teams for four years. Without question he's the best available on the market.

Teams with new head coaches usually bring in their own coordinators so those who are fired or the hot seat are:

Nick Sorensen (Jacksonville)
Danny Crossman (Miami)
Frank Ross (Houston)
Tom McMahon (Denver)
Rich Bisaccia (Las Vegas)
Thomas McGaughey (New York G)
Chris Tabor (Chicago)
Ryan Ficken (Minnesota)
Chase Blackburn (Carolina)

Not a great list...without looking deeply only Bisaccia catches my immediate attention but he's 61 and looking at his history its obvious he's a warm weather guy. Most likely he won't be interested.

Last time round we showed interest in the following guys: Brayden Coombes, Mike Mallory, Chris Horton, Tom Quinn and Wes Welker.

One name stands out, Chris Horton the Baltimore coordinator and he produced a #1 ranked unit this season, what a miss.

There were more missed opportunites such as Larry Izzo who was an assistant at the time but we didn't show any interest and he became Seahawks coordinator and put up the #3 ranked unit this year.

There was another guy I made note of, Heath Farwell but we moved too slowly whilst LaFleur was busy building his offensive staff and by the time he paid attention to ST Heath Farwell was hired as Bills coordinator and this year he ran the #2 ranked unit.

Horton, Izzo, Farwell all available in the same year. Rizzo the coordinator who we failed to get his ST was ranked #5. We really really messed up on all of them.

Before we hired Pettine's mini-me I looked at ST assistants around the league, Looking through the list I found that some are still valid options for us three years on.

Quote

Matthew Harper - was assistant with the Eagles under Fipp between 2013-14 (25th, 1st), moved to assistant DB coach (ST dropped to 10th) before returning as ST assistant (2nd, 16th, 15th). Since switched to the 49ers in a lateral move. Won superbowl with Eagles and has a shot winning another one with the 49rers. 37 years old.

Tracey Smith - assisted under Brad Seely for 9 years, oversaw top ST units at 49ers. 7th in 2013 with 49ers, 5th DVOA in 2018 with Houston. Now assistant with the Seahawks. 39 years old.

Tyrone McKenzie -  has a direct connection with LaFleur. Was assistant at Rams under Fassel for 1 year (2nd) before going with LaFleur to Tennessee but to coach linebackers. Been out of the league since he was fired by the Lions last year. 36 years old.

Braydon Coombes - we were heavily linked with him. Assisted on ST since 2013 (12th, 6th, 8th, 28th, 21st, 7th). Was coordinator with the Lions last year and was fired because he did a no-no during the game and he hasn't been in the league since. 35 years old.

Bryron Storer - was special teams assistant at Tampa (18th, 14th) and San Diego (8th) for 3 years before stepping away from the game to help out his father's business. Initially planned to do this for 2 years but ended up doing 4. Now back at Oakland (22nd) working under Bisaccia again. May have been coordinator by now if it wasn't for his father's health issues. Bisaccia says he's smart, brilliant with players, has a friendly demeanor which belies his ferocity when it comes to football. Still Assistant at Oakland. 37 years old.

Marwan Maalouf was another guy I made note of but didn't write up a profile. Like McKenzie he has been out of the game since he was fired as Vikings coordinator last year.

I also made note that several of the candidates work/worked under ST coaches with solid pedigrees- Harbaugh, Rosburg, Seely, Bisaccia, Fipp, Toub, Fassel.

Looking at ST assistants around the league now, whllst most of them are too inexperienced to be considered there are some viable candidates:

Matthew Smiley (Bills) - I suspect Hackett will look at him if he is hired as Head Coach - knows each other from the Jags.
Phil Galiano (Saints) - Rizzo assistant. Well traveled. Totals 5 years of ST assistant experience.
Tracey Smith (Seahawks) - He has been ST assistant for so long on various teams. I wonder what holding him back from making the step up? Been part of many good ST units.
Bryron Storer (Raiders) - six years as Bisaccia's assistant on Bucs, Chargers and Raiders
Matt Daniels (Cowboys) - four years as Fassel's assistant on Rams and Cowboys. Whilst LaFleur never worked with him they do have that Rams connection.
Matthew Harper (49ers) - Solid resume. The fact Shanahan hired him will perk LaFleur ears up

It will be those guys plus Joe Judge who is clearly the top candidate.

Rayna Stewart. He is far too inexperienced with just 1 year ST assistant under his belt. We can safely rule him out.

Yeah....I know nothing about MLF.....but I think he'll recognize the cluster**** that STs were all season and look to bring in somebody with some kind of cred. If he doesnt....or if he simply promotes this guy......I'll know something about MLF that I'd prefer not to know.

It's time to put this ST issue to rest - both with a credible hire and some procedural changes on who's assigned to the tasks.

Me personally? I want some serious as **** coach thats gonna drill the basics into the troops.

Part of the problem could be the focus and time spent on STs.

If MLF is giving Drayton 3 minutes at the end of practice for all special teams, that's the problem.

I'm not saying that's the case, but we gotta find out WHY the ST units have been a total disaster.

Could be player attitude towards playing STs?

Are they just going through the motions like Lancaster on the FG??

Gotta find out why first.  Maybe Drayton just sucks???

Maybe when a marginal guy like Lancaster just goes through the motions you cut his ***. Make an example out of the guy. He's a fringe roster guy to begin with. Get some guys attention to pay attention to details.

Lol, people are so sure of a firing. I wouldn't be surprised if he is kept, and a special asst. is hired to help with the workload.

When a unit is historically bad, you don't keep the guy in charge of that unit. It's not that difficult. If LaFleur keeps him and the fails again miserably, the GM needs to start looking at the HC and wonder if he's the right guy.

id go with a New england or Baltimore guy, two organizations that put a lot of effort and research into STs.

New England assistant coach is too inexperienced.

Baltimore has T. J. Weist who is a bit on the older side but has 3 years experience as ST assistant. His resume has Ron Zook vibes for me. They also have another guy called Randy Brown but it appears he's just a kicking specialist but a very good one at that.

What you want is Joe Judge. He's going to be expensive, probably more expensive than Rizzo who's contract demands we balked at 3 years ago.

Because some irrational fans feel the need to get their pound of flesh doesn't mean that is what is going to happen. It might happen, but then again it very well might not.

GB needed this problem fixed before this past weekend.  It’s too late, window closed.  It mattered a sh1t-ton 72 hours ago.  Now it’s just a sh1t-stain on the record books.  I’ve no doubt they’ll “attempt” to fix the problem but it will always be too late.

Which issue? There are like 9 different issues with our ST units, each one has different answers.

Our inability to cover kicks is rooted in an entirely different problem than our FG woes (and even that issue has multiple sources)
