One thing this whole ordeal has taught me is that in general the people on this planet really need to lighten up... Stop worrying all the time, yes the virus is a serious issue but that doesn't mean you have to be serious all the time suddenly. Newsflash you're going to die, nothing can stop it... Maybe it'll be from the virus, probably not... But either way you are going to die so stop spending so much time worrying about how it might happen and just enjoy life while you can for crying out loud.

People would probably never go outside if we had a running total of everything else that people die from

People would probably stop eating bananas if you aired a TV commercial in the superbowl talking about how they're radioactive.

Joe 6pack lacks both basic knowledge as well as critical thinking skills.

FDA approves coronavirus saliva test

First FDA-approved testing method that does not use invasive cotton swabs to collect samples

Quote

Rutgers University has developed a novel coronavirus saliva test that will be available at a number of New Jersey testing sites starting Tuesday.

The Food and Drug Administration granted emergency use authorization (EUA) to Rutgers' saliva testing approach, which is the first FDA-approved testing method that does not use invasive cotton swabs to collect samples, the university announced in a Monday press release.

"The impact of this approval is significant," Professor Andrew Brooks, chief operating officer and director of technology development at Rutgers’ RUCDR Infinite Biologics, said in a statement. "It means we no longer have to put health care professionals at risk for infection by performing nasopharyngeal or oropharyngeal collections."

4/14/2020 MoL Scores:

Methodology and disclaimer: MoL score is a simple metric for measuring rate of spread of the novel coronavirus within communities.  The metric was developed by mission and TLO and has not been subjected to academic peer review.  The MoL looks at a trailing average of daily new cases and compares this to trailing active cases within the community.  These rankings do not represent the opinion of anyone other than mission and TLO and should not be taken as advice of any kind.  Please note while the numbers themselves are objective calculations, smugness and Taylor Swift lyrics may factor into our commentary and decisions on tiers.  The MoL reserves the right to make changes to this methodology at any time.  Please follow all relevant governmental and/or WHO/CDC guidance.  We will defeat this virus.

"'You, with your words like knives
And swords and weapons that you use against me"

- Taylor Swift

There really is a Swift lyric for everything.  Today the MoL debuts the disclaimer and almost every country is headed in the right direction.  Good job!

Tier 1: Outbreak under control, safe to begin relaxing social distancing measures

South Korea: 0.9 (South Korea stays below 1 by reporting just 27 cases today in the entire country)

Hong Kong: 1.2 (meanwhile, Hong Kong hits a new low, 3 new cases!)

Australia: 1.6 (great job Shady!)

Czech Republic: 2.1

Austria: 2.5

Switzerland: 3.8 (the land of Federer jump into tier 1 reporting under 300 cases for the second consecutive day)

Tier 2: New case growth is minimal suggesting social distancing is working, likely a few weeks away from breaking into tier 1

Italy: 3.9 (a new all-time low for the first time in four days)

Germany: 4.4 (lowest new case number in nearly a month for Germany, they're looking good)

Israel: 4.7 (great numbers but lets just hope no Passover bump)

Denmark: 4.8

Spain: 4.9 (great set of numbers last few days, active cases plummeting)

Portugal: 5.2

Sweden: 5.7 (they're doing fine)

Iran: 5.8* (almost comically smooth, we dont buy it)

Netherlands: 5.9 (another day another step in the right direction, as noted yesterday)

Philippines: 6.1

France: 6.2

Global: 6.6 (for the first time in a long time, global MoL has dropped below China , but still think its probably a blip there)

USA: 6.8 (a great set of numbers today, see state by state figures below)

China: 7.0 (this is becoming a bit of a concern with the Russia situation.  overall numbers still quite low)

Belgium: 7.1

Canada: 8.4 (see mission's note earlier re: US-Canada border, I think both countries will be out of the woods by early June)

Brazil: 8.4 (slowing down, a bit)

Tier 3: Countries in this group that are showing increased MoLs have the potential to go deep into the danger zones, but countries with falling MoLs may only be a couple of days from tier 2 status and may have already peaked in gross # of new cases

UK: 10.1 (still looks like UK may be a week behind US and Canada, and closer to 3 weeks behind Europe, but they've plateaud which is good)

Japan: 11.1 (last two days have been very encouraging tbh)

Turkey: 11.6

Mexico: 15.4 (our North American friends finally showing some progress, climate is probably a help)

Ireland: 15.6 (testing related bump, they're headed in the right direction)

India: 16.2

Note on South America: MoL have considered adding a few South American countries, namely Peru, Ecuador, and Chile that have seen some alarming cases numbers in the past week or two, but the data is still very spotty there, so we're holding off for now

Tier 4: Aggressive growth, still likely have not peaked in single day cases, and likely a week or two minimum from peak in deaths (however many of these countries are still slowing down)

Russia: 23.4 (while the numbers are still alarming they are showing signs of slowing a bit the last couple of days, lets hope that continues)

USA State Level MoLs

All of the numbers are getting much better here EXCEPT for South Dakota as the MoL has been calling out for a while now.  South Dakota had to shut down a plant today because there were over 50 cases at just that one location.  I think they're becoming a real hot spot sadly.

We'd even like to thank @pwny @Glen and others for their critical attitude because of the attention it brings to the great work MoL is doing

So when they give an 18 month timeline for a vaccine, does that start from January? Last month, when the lockdowns started? Or from current day?

Just curious.

Its pretty much intentionally ambiguous imo

In all likelihood this will be a world record vaccine and I wouldnt be shocked if we have it by EOY or early 2021 but every time they say 18 months they are intentionally keeping that date as far out as possible to keep expectations in check

As we’ve said before focusing on 1 particular day is meaningless.  You have to look at overall trends

I think the issue with it is a lot of people are coming in here and are trusting what they see. People come in the thread and ask things that many of us have discussed and come to conclusions on almost a month ago, because they’re just finding the thread or whatever.

People come in and they see what appears to be something scientific posted in an easy to digest format and they probably don’t know that it’s not really supposed to be taken seriously. That’s why we get one person posting it to another forum, another person saying they thought it was completely serious, another person asking for methodology, and then a fourth person who knows it’s bunk arguing that people need to know it’s bunk.

If you want to post them to pass the time, that’s fine by me. We all need to do stuff to help keep us sane through all of this. But we probably do need to do a better job of informing those who haven’t been following the shtick for 10 years or reading the discussion in here for the 300 total pages across all threads that they’re for fun. Because clearly some people aren’t getting it, and it’s far too serious of a topic for something done in fun to be taken seriously by someone who just doesn’t understand what’s going on.

PWNY FOR PRESIDENT

glem for some ulterior cabinet position which pays well but has little real responsibility
