Okay thank you.  I'm going to hold off on getting you the workbook for the team until I get these new team rosters workbooks finished up.  Most likely Sat, but maybe as early as friday.

Good morning,

So I spent some time tonight trying to develop a better extension process that rather than having guidelines for various types but something that groups them all with the exception of actually tagged players.

A quick note about this is that I sent this to sparky151 because he accepted my invitation to help me figure this out, so the example used is Joe Mixon.  I'm posting it here for a couple reasons; transparency being one but I've learned over the years its best to get more than one opinion or more than one or two looking for potential issues as well as possible loopholes it could create.

Proposal for Extension Changes

So to avoid having to create two different systems to handle rookie / vet types, this is what I'm looking at doing, @sparky151 as noted I sent you something very similar to this detailing this proposed fix.

I personally do not see extensions as a money savings process.  There is a reason why the league has extensions and restructures.  As you already know that the sole purpose of the restructure is to take current cap hits and push them into the future that in many cases creates massive savings for the current year.  Where I view extensions as a process to retain valued players that are rapidly approaching the open market.  It's a process specifically designed avoid losing the player to a team willing to offer more money.  So these must be looked at least in my opinion as something of value not only for the franchise but the player as well.  An extension contract can't be forced on the player.  Even restructuring a players contract when the amount of the overall value of the contract doesn't change; the player still must sign off on it.  So again, these have to contain a value high enough that would justify a player signing it and it has to be packaged to fit every player or teams situation because doing this on a case by case where myself or someone else determines the value would just be subjective opinion.  So understand that I'm looking for something that will satisfy the bulk of these player/team variables and not just looking at one specific player.

The first thing is allowing extensions for players ONLY in their contract year, not two years away from the open market.  IF this does happen frequently enough irl I'd be okay with keeping this current rule but my personal opinion is that anything greater than a contract year is to benefit the team's finances and not the players bank account which should be considered.

Using the example of Joe Mixon RB

Mixon's expected APY and contract terms are listed as such

Min APY Value $4,523,100
Min SB Value $5,987,285
Contract Length (can exceed by 2 yrs) 5

Which would be a very underrated in contractual value across the board.  No agent would ever allow his player of Mixons caliber to sign a 5 year deal of this amount and under the current structure the contract length that you create can exceed an additional 2 years.  Which would really be a steal and totally unrealistic in every way.

So rather than basing the value of the contract strictly on an APY value we also focus on the number of years that the player is being extended.

How it would work

Extending the player to an overall contract length of 3 years or less the APY value would be the greater value of either the players expected APY value, in this example $4,523,100 and the lowest 5th year option value for his position which is $4,564,603 (see chart below for all positional values).  In this case the higher amount of the 5th year option value is used as the APY, again for contract extensions of 3 or less.  Extending past the 3 years the values for the various tag amounts are used, meaning the greater number of years you look to extend the more you'll be paying out.

  • 4 year = Transitional Tag value ($7,372,270)
  • 5 year = Non-Exclusive Tag value ($8,505,332)
  • 6 year = Exclusive Tag value ($13,480,000)
  • 7 year = Exclusive Tag value * 120%  ($16,176,000)

Edit:  Or the expected APY values keeping with the greater than amount

Could even apply a similar system to boost the required values for guaranteed money.  Using a structure such as this I'm not certain we would need to develop additional guidelines for 1st round picks, but please give this proposal some thought and review the values below for all positions considering any potential issues as well as loopholes that might develop within this structure and let me know what you think.

I have got to get this resolved soon so that I can get these new workbooks out to you guys and would like to have that done by Sat night at the latest.

@YogiBiz  Might not have any interest in them but tagged you so it doesn't get overlooked.

I hear you on the Mixon value, he makes a good example.  The 4 million APY value is low but is he an exception to this concept system or are there more and if so how many more.  If you put his value at the 8 million mark where I agree is where it should be does it prevent a larger group of lessor talent from being extended.
