New stimulus proposal seems a lot more realistic than some of the other recent ideas. Would give another round of $1,200 checks and extend the extra $600 a week for unemployment until January.

I don't really need the $1,200 but... I'll find something to spend it on...I am due for a new pc build.

Sounds like it's not going to pass. But if it does, holy moly. $1200/child? That's a lot of money.

5/12/2020 MoL Scores:

Methodology and disclaimer: MoL score is a simple metric for measuring rate of spread of the novel coronavirus within communities.  The metric was developed by mission and TLO and has not been subjected to academic peer review.  The MoL looks at a trailing average of daily new cases and compares this to trailing active cases within the community.  These rankings do not represent the opinion of anyone other than mission and TLO and should not be taken as advice of any kind.  Please note while the numbers themselves are objective calculations, smugness and Taylor Swift lyrics may factor into our commentary and decisions on tiers.  The MoL reserves the right to make changes to this methodology at any time.  Please follow all relevant governmental and/or WHO/CDC guidance.  We will defeat this virus.

Today the USA gets better and better and the US is firmly in tier 1.

Tier 1: Outbreak under control, safe to begin relaxing social distancing measures

giphy.gif

Tier 1 countries are pretty,... pretty... pretty good

How to safely open up in Tier 1? Take a look at the MoL method for proper easing, otherwise known as the MoL public health cost benefit matrix.

Israel: 0.6

Netherlands: 0.8

Hong Kong: 1.0

Czech Republic: 1.2

Japan: 1.2

Italy: 1.2

France: 1.2

Portugal: 1.4

China: 1.4

South Korea: 1.5

Belgium: 1.6

Switzerland: 1.9

Australia: 1.9

Ireland: 2.5

USA: 2.6

UK: 2.7

Austria: 2.8

Turkey: 3.2

Germany: 3.5

Sweden: 3.6

Spain: 3.9

Tier 2: New case growth is minimal suggesting social distancing is working, likely a few weeks away from breaking into tier 1

Tier 2 countries aren't  doing as well as Tier 1 countries, but eh, we'll give 'em a pass, why not!  Especially since Larry doesn't want to get fatwahed again.

Philippines: 3.1

Global: 3.6

Singapore: 4.2

Canada: 4.2

Denmark: 5.4

Russia: 8.2

Tier 3: Countries in this group that are showing increased MoLs have the potential to go deep into the danger zones, but countries with falling MoLs may only be a couple of days from tier 2 status and may have already peaked in gross # of new cases

giphy.gif

These countries could really do a lot better if they followed common decency standards, like washing their hands or respecting wood

India: 10.6

Iran: 11.7

Brazil: 15.3

Tier 4: Aggressive growth, still likely have not peaked in single day cases, and likely a week or two minimum from peak in deaths (however many of these countries are still slowing down)

We feel very bad for the last Tier 4 country remaining on our list, the Mexico.  Its like that time Funkhauser became an orphan at 60 (RIP Funkhauser).

Mexico: 24.4

Wow, great job!

MoL Deaths

Deaths now 28% below the all-time high and expected to fall more over the next day, lets see.

There have been 3.361 deaths since May 10th compared to an MoL projection of 4,055.  Wow, great job!

I'm assuming I'm getting a paper check and apparently they are going out by involve level. Maybe I make more money than I thought

There's a federal site to look it up on. If you're really curious.

Why are nursing homes still such a problem?

What can be done to help them?

Close quarters, and the fact that this disease specifically targets them, as many have underlying health conditions to boot.

What would really help is if we moved and isolated the positive cases instead of just letting the virus run rampant through the nursing homes.  A friend of mine talked to one of the MD congressman and was told it wasn't his responsibility to worry about them, and the senior ombudsman said that, despite all that was occurring, there weren't any plans to revise what they were doing until the pandemic was over and they could take stock of what worked and what didn't work.

So like I said, pretty shameful.

Yeah my first one basically ended up cancelling out my state taxes.  Still aiming for that grill if we get another one, though I'm headed back to work part-time (my decision on that) and with the additional hazard pay, it will basically be a 40 hour week for me at 24 hours.  He also paid 2/3 of my salary last pay period with the PPP loan that he just received, and covered many more people currently not working.  I do agree that this seems more reasonable instead of $2000 a month.  Of course, we already have partisan politics at play with the proposal, but that happened with the last one so hopefully they work something out.

Senate recap with some quotes from Fauci:

https://www.npr.org/2020/05/12/853142098/trump-testing-asymptomatic-spread-could-be-flashpoints-in-key-senate-hearing

Quote

Dr. Anthony Fauci, the nation's top infectious disease expert, warned Tuesday of states and localities skipping over federal guidelines while trying to lift restrictions and restart their economies amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Speaking remotely during a unique Senate health committee hearing, Fauci told lawmakers that his concern is that if some areas "jump over" guidelines from the federal government and "prematurely open up," there will be "little spikes that turn into outbreaks."

His statements follow an email he sent to The New York Times on Monday in which he wrote, in part: "If we skip over the checkpoints in the guidelines to 'Open America Again,' then we risk the danger of multiple outbreaks throughout the country. This will not only result in needless suffering and death, but would actually set us back on our quest to return to normal."
