I have no problem with ppl saying Empire is the better film but A New Hope is more magical. It changed cinema forever too.
THE DUKE
My heart says A New Hope, my head says Empire. I think my head is going to win out this round. Just too many iconic scenes in Empire.
Daniel
Empire dominating the voting is restoring some of my faith in humanity, and to a much, much, much, much lesser degree, yall's tastes.
scar988
It's Empire. and it's not even close.
MacReady
A New Hope was best for Leia fans. Empire Strikes Back was Han fans. Return of the Jedi was Luke fans. Empire, New Hope and Return of the Jedi is my order for original trilogy Star Wars movies. Empire introduced Yoda, Sidius, Lando, Vader as Luke’s father and had the best pacing and directing of any of the Star Wars movies.

When people talk about all time greats, one thing that gets left behind is that Empire isn't just the best Star Wars movie, but it, by itself, has what is without a doubt the biggest twist in movie history with this part. IIRC, they even told James Earl Jones that this line was a lie to prevent spoilers. That and, as referenced in animaltested's above post, maybe the most badass romantic line in movie history, which was all Harrison Ford btw. Original script had him say "I love you too," which we all know Han would not say. Let's also not forget the introduction of Boba Fett. Hell, if it weren't for that minor character, we'd all be denied the best Star Wars related thing since the original trilogy.

I could type out a long response, but I think I can do it much more efficiently with this picture:
