TCMD- INSIDE THE LOCKER THREAD

The only way I can see the Buccaneers FA being graded among the worst, is that it isn't taking into account the Buccaneers cap room. Paying that kind of money on a team tight on cap makes no sense, but the Buccaneers faced near competition on all three big bids that were won and are not crippled in the least cap wise. In fact we have around 15 mil left, which is fair compared to a lot of the participating teams. Would it have been a greater success to have simply maintained cap space and fielded the Buccs 2017 defense? I doubt many would say so. Johnson and Breeland combined are comparable per year to the cost of Suh, throw in Poe and it's less than Suh and Andre Branch. Personally I don't understand how one could think this is a poor take on the offseason -- the contracts don't even balloon as many others handed out do, so at no point are the Buccaneers handicapped.

Zero players were restructured on the Buccs, therefore no money pushed into the future to manipulate a "bigger" this year.
Mike Evans was extended.
Muhammad Wilkerson, Dontari Poe, Robert Quinn, Trumaine Johnson, Breeshad Breeland, and Jimmie Ward were added to dramatically improve the defense. We are competing against Drew Brees, Matt Ryan and Cam Newton. Defense is needed. Wilkerson and Poe should help against the Saints dynamic run game and keep offensive linemen from blowing up linebackers. Trumaine, a top left boundary corner, has size and press abilities that should provide significant upgrades over the 34? 35? year old 5'10" Brent Grimes going up against the likes of Julio Jones and Michael Thomas.  Bashaud Breeland is one of the top right boundary corners, and likewise provides size, age, and schematic upgrades. The only secondary loss was Grimes, who signed for roughly what Breeland got. Johnson, had I not bid significant signing bonus to, would have gone for more money to the Jets -- who I assume you are knocking for having not spent their cap room.

What's Better:
5T: William Gholston || Muhammad Wilkerson
1T: Chris Baker || Dontari Poe
3T: Gerald McCoy || Gerald McCoy
9T: Noah Spence/Robert Ayers || Robert Quinn/Noah Spence
LB: Kwon Alexander || Kwon Alexander
LB: Lavonte David || Lavonte David
LCB: Brent Grimes || Trumaine Johnson
RCB: Vernon Hargreaves || Bashaud Breeland
Nickel: Robert McClain || Vernon Hargreaves
S: Justin Evans || Justin Evans
S: TJ Ward || Jimmie Ward

Jimmie Ward likely doesn't return in 2019 (traded for him on a 5th year rookie contract), and if he does it's cheaper or he played lights out. Offensively Demarco Murray and Mike Iupati are rentals, that's like 15 mil returned if they don't play up to the level we need (or make the team out of training camp).

There are very few significant holes left on the Buccs. The obvious ones are OL (guard and/or center [Marpet, Smith and Dotson are good; Iupati serviceable]) and RB (Peyton Barber was good in limited time, Demarco Murray is old). Depth is the other thing that could be upgraded, but that's every team.

Like I said don’t hate. Lucky I didn’t do full fa grades for every team ike I was going to. I only looked at free agent signings not trades and transactions this is not a reflection on the whole offseason. I didn’t like the Johnson contract and thought you would go after a offensive player too. I realise that we are only half way through free agency. The dolphins contracts you highlight were not mine and the reason we are in cap trouble irl. I’m just not a fan of Breeland which I accept may put me in the minority.

FREE AGENCY NEWS

Not a ton of action this week in free agency as a record number of free agents have already been signed over the past 4 rounds.  271 players signed stripping the league of almost 900 million this year and an expected payout for the grand total contract amount of $4,279,119,782....That's right over 4 Billion dollars.  So it's not surprising that only half the league has entered into this free agency, with the low turn out, those are attempting to sign players shouldn't have much trouble signing them as 80% of the 40+ pending contracts are planning to sign new deals with new teams.

Deadline is tonight to have your offers completed, still plenty of time for things to change as teams slowly find the money and need to make more offers.

Round 5 Free Agency Bidding (40% APY decrease)

  • Deadline to have contracts created – Fri, Mar 2nd @ 9pm

  • FA Bidding Results - Fri, Mar 2nd @ 10pm

Round 6 Free Agency Bidding (50% APY decrease)

  • Deadline to have contracts created – Sun, Mar 4th @ 9pm

  • FA Bidding Results - Sun, Mar 4th @ 10pm

Note:  NFL Combine ends - Mon, Mar 5th

Remember the last reserve trigger for the upcoming fa bidding round (Round 6) that any qualifying reserve offer will be included into the fa award process.

In the workbook you have 6 allotted contracts, that you can use to place reserve contracts on players previously on your roster.  However, these contracts must be triggered by another action, either by another team or yourself to be included in the award bidding process.

  • Reserve Bidding Triggers
    • Another team must make a qualifying contract bid on the player.

    • You make a contract bid using one of the 3 allotted UFA bids.

    • Wait until the 6th round of free agent bidding.
