GB entered the TCMD process looking to do the following

  1. Hire New Defensive Coordinator in Jim Leonhard
  2. Create some cap space to allow activity in FA
  3. Lock up core pieces for the next few years (Adams and Za'Darius Smith)
  4. Re-sign key ERFA and RFA players (Lazard, Tonyan, Sullivan)
  5. OL -- Add depth and developmental pieces at both OT and IOL
  6. Skills -- Add RB to pair with Dillon, WR and TE if value presents itself in UFA or draft
  7. DL -- Secure a starting DL to pair with Kenny Clark
  8. CB -- Add veteran in UFA to compete opposite Jaire Alexander

1.  Jim Leonhard was hired just before the start of UFA after a lengthy pursuit.

2.  Restructures and Extensions have created the cap space to sign the FA players listed below.
GB has cap space = $7.34M.  Not a lot of $$ to play with, but there is some good value in the UFA pool that will be pursued for the chance to come to GB and contend for a playoff team with a Super Bowl caliber roster

3 & 4.   Adams and Z Smith signed to fair contract extension both helping the team with needed cap space and rewarding 2 players that were All Pro players in 2020.   Getting Lazard, Tonyan and Sullivan back on below APY deals with each of them having the potential to be rewarded with mid season extension should the performance continue

5.  Missing out on Reiter in Round 1 of UFA was tough, but GB was not in a position to go that high on the contract.  With Jenkins, Turner, Patrick, Runyan, GB has some options to fill the IOL starters.   Bahktiare, Turner and Wagner give GB a solid OT group

6.  Area is still to be address.  Looking at the next few rounds of UFA to see where the value is at these positions prior to the draft.

7. Missing on Robertson-Harris in round 1 meant that GB went more aggressive in round 2 and targeted both Sheldon Rankins and Angelo Blackson.   Rankins will be a nice veteran piece on the interior DL and will slot in nicely in base D alongside Kenny Clark.  His 12 QB pressures in 2020 on 415 snaps will be an upgrade of the previous DL starters.   Blackson was probably an overpay, but GB had info that he was being targeted, so a late increase in the offer was made.  GB is looking for Blackson to build upon his 12 QB pressures in 2020 with the benefit of playing alongside Clark, Rankins, Z Smith, Rashan Gary, Preston Smith.   New DC Jim Leonhard will have a deep DL/EDGE group to rotate and fit into his aggressive pressure scheme defense.
Clark - Rankins - Kingsley Keke -  Blackson -  Lowry  make up the current IDL group
Z Smith -  Rashan Gary - Preston Smith    make up the top 3 for the EDGE group

8.  Finding a starter opposite of Jaire Alexander was a priority and with limited cap space, GB was looking to find some options that have a history of performing well in coverage.  Sullivan, Johnson and Dennard all posted sub 100 passer ratings against in 2020 with Dennard having 3 consecutive years sub 100 and Johnson doing so in 2019 as well.  Competition at the CB spot should be a good thing to help new DC Leonhard with his aggressive scheme.

@squire12 I wouldn’t fill too bad about missing on Reiter.   He’s pretty meh,  though Rodgers would probably make him look as good as Mahomes.    He was better than Kilgore,  but I’m not sure by how much.

for what his APY was, the value was there.

Adding him to an OL with Bahktiari - Jenkins - Reiter -  Turner - Wagner

with the option to add in draft or slide Jenkins to RT and move Runyan or Patrick to LG and have Wagner be the swing OT.

Ohhhh I am legit happy the IRL Texans snagged the former GB OL guru.  Why did he leave for CLE two years ago? (I know it was sort of a promotion... but still)

Also, how I envied GB on AJ Dillon and Jaire Alexander.  Amos in FA?? Yes, please.

When 49ers passed on Rogers for Smith, I rage quit... lol... (now I am out here looking for my Lott jersey... i.haz.a.sad)
